International Students at Choate Rosemary Hall: How to Succeed at a Top U.S. Boarding School

What Support Does Choate Rosemary Hall Offer to International Students?

For wealthy international families worldwide, Choate Rosemary Hall is an incredible way to experience American education. But getting into one of the best boarding schools in the country takes more than being book smart. The students must also demonstrate adaptability and independence. With the right understanding of Choate’s support systems, international students can grow academically, socially, and personally.

How Do International Students Thrive Academically and Socially?

Making up almost 20% of the student body population are the international students. Hence, at Choate Rosemary Hall, international students are supported from the get-go. Officers from the Global Engagement Office offer International Mentors, International Pre-orientation, and Cultural Programming to ensure that foreign students successfully transition and thrive at Choate.

International Student Mentor

This program is designed to guide new international students through their first year. They are paired with the rising 5th and 6th form students and occasionally 4th form students. These seniors will serve as mentors and will be paired with one to three new international students.

The mentors act as a resource and support the students in the following:

  • Assist in the pre-orientation program.
  • Attend mentor-mentee events each term.
  • Meet one-on-one with mentees as the schedule allows.

This structure allows the new international students to feel welcomed and supported as they navigate an unfamiliar academic and residential environment. At the same time, it also provides meaningful leadership opportunities to existing Choate students

International Pre-Orientation

Choate Rosemary Hall requires all their new international students to participate in the International Pre-Orientation program during their first full academic year. This initiative helps ensure that the students are not overwhelmed as they start their boarding school journey.

The program includes:

  • A summer mentorship with a returning senior international student.
  • Opportunities to meet the faculty and campus area directors.
  • Insight session with prefects and other students regarding their experiences at Choate.
  • Social events where new international students can meet other students and build friendships in a fun setting.

This program helps foreign students adjust to the school environment way before the school year officially begins.

Cultural Programming

At Choate Rosemary Hall, international students are strongly encouraged to immerse themselves in campus life, whether through joining clubs, participating in athletics, attending campus events, or simply engaging in conversations with peers. Choate believes that active involvement contributes to personal growth and fosters belonging.

Engagement in boarding school activities helps international students:

  • Build confidence in English communication
  • Gain new cultural perspectives.
  • Form lifelong friendships.

This program allows international students not only to adapt to the American culture but also to share their own cultures proudly. In doing so, they help enrich the broader Choate community.

How Competitive is Admission for International Students?

Admission to Choate Rosemary Hall gives its students access to exceptional academics, a rich residential life experience, and a wide range of extracurricular activities. However, the admissions process is highly selective. Students are evaluated not only for their transcripts and engagement in extracurricular activities but also for their character and overall readiness for a residential environment.

Also, admissions for international students are even more competitive since they are competing against domestic and international students with an outstanding applicant profile. On top of that, many families may not be very well-versed with the admissions process and standards of the top boarding schools in the country.
