Cardinal Education specializes in HSPT prep in the Bay Area, offering expert tutoring, customized study plans, and realistic HSPT practice tests that boost scores and confidence.
Whether your child is applying to schools like Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, Archbishop Riordan High School, Junipero Serra High School (Belmont), Notre Dame High School, Mercy High School, Archbishop Mitty High School, Bellarmine College Preparatory, Notre Dame High School (San Jose), Saint Francis High School, Bishop O’Dowd High School, Moreau Catholic High School, and other Catholic high schools, we’ll prepare them to excel on test day.
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is required by many Catholic high schools for admission. Unlike the SSAT and ISEE, the HSPT is only offered once per admissions cycle, so there are no opportunities for retakes.
The High School Placement Test or HSPT is a standardized exam used by many Catholic and parochial high schools in the U.S. as part of their admissions process. The test covers five main areas:
If you’re aiming to get into the top Catholic schools in the Bay Area, preparing early with full-length HSPT practice tests and targeted tutoring makes all the difference in maximizing your child’s score and increasing your chances of admission.
Bay Area parents choose Cardinal Education for HSPT prep because we customize every tutoring program to match their child’s unique strengths, weaknesses, and Catholic high school admissions goals.
Practice is the backbone of our test prep approach. Our HSPT practice tests mirror the timing, format, and scoring of the real exam to prepare students for every section.
We begin with a full-length diagnostic test to identify strengths and weaknesses and create an effective study plan.
We focus on content mastery and test-taking strategy for each section, including time management, guessing strategy, and pacing.
Our students take multiple practice tests so we can measure growth and adjust instruction as needed.
We offer in-person HSPT tutoring for families across the Bay Area as well as online HSPT prep to accommodate your busy schedules.
We serve families from the following locations: Atherton, Burlingame, Woodside, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley, Palo Alto, Cupertino, San Francisco, and other places where the most successful and ambitious families live.
The HSPT is typically administered in January, but preparation should begin several months in advance.
Starting early allows time to master content, reduce anxiety, and take multiple practice tests.
If you’re short on time, we offer accelerated prep programs focused on high-impact skills and strategies.
Your child’s future starts now. Let Cardinal Education give them the tools and confidence to conquer the HSPT and stand out in the competitive Catholic school admissions process.

So, who needs to take it? Generally, it’s for 9th-grade Catholic school applicants. While there are other factors to consider, like grades and interviews, HSPT scores are often a key piece of the puzzle for admissions, scholarship consideration, and even helping schools place students in the right academic levels for their freshman year.
While all three are basically entrance exams, they’re definitely not interchangeable. Here are the basic differences.
Ultimately, the test you need to take comes down to what the specific high school you’re interested in requires. Always confirm with their admissions office!
The earlier, the better! That is our general rule. But if you want a more focused timeline, here is our recommendation:
The key is to find a balance that works for your child. The most important thing is to reduce stress and build confidence so they feel ready on test day!
Yes, absolutely! At Cardinal Education, we offer online HSPT tutoring.
We understand that families have different needs. Some might have a busy schedule and are unable to chauffeur their kids to and from our offices in Burlingame or Woodside, while some just want to avail of the tutoring services in the comfort of their own homes. On some occasions, our families are located in different cities or even other countries, so their only option is to do virtual sessions. Our online tutoring programs are designed to be just as personalized and effective as the in-person sessions. We use video conferencing platforms and other digital tools to ensure an interactive learning experience.
