The SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) is a standardized test developed by The College Board and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is a big test taken by many high schoolers in the U.S. when they’re thinking about college. It is a common playing field for all applicants, no matter where they went to high school, because it measures what a student has learned throughout the years, especially in reading, writing, and math. It’s not about memorizing every single thing learned in school, but more about showing off reasoning skills.
It used to be a really long test, but now, it’s all digital and a bit shorter. The Digital SAT covers sections on Reading and Writing, and then Math, with an online calculator allowed for all math problems.
So, what’s the deal with your SAT score when you’re applying to colleges? Honestly, a strong one can really make your whole application shine. It’s a way to show admissions officers you’re more than ready for whatever tough programs they’ve got. Think about it: if two students have pretty much the same grades and do similar activities, that fantastic SAT score? That’s often the tie-breaker, giving you the edge. Now, it’s the only thing they consider – far from it – but it can certainly be a super valuable boost to your overall profile.
Not all schools require the SAT. Many top colleges are “test-optional,” meaning they’ll look at your scores if you send them, but won’t penalize you if you don’t. Princeton, Duke, and Northwestern are examples.
Then you’ve got “test-blind” colleges, like the entire University of California system (UCLA, Berkeley, etc) —they won’t even consider test scores at all.
But some highly competitive universities, like Harvard, Yale, Brown, Stanford, Dartmouth, Caltech, Georgetown, Purdue, MIT, and many others, are now bringing back the requirement after temporarily suspending it due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SAT went digital in 2024, and that was a pretty big change, mostly for the better. First off, it’s shorter—two hours instead of three. Students take it on a laptop or tablet, either their own or one provided by the test center. Second, the format is adaptive, meaning the test adjusts to you. And third, the reading passages are shorter now, and you can even use a calculator for all the math questions. The digital SAT is designed to be more efficient, and frankly, a bit less stressful.
