Quick Answer for Busy Parents
Cardinal Education offers personalized SAT and ACT prep for Bay Area students, including full-length practice tests that help families decide which test actually fits their strengths before committing to a prep plan. As a general rule, slower readers, students who lose focus easily, or those with learning differences often do better on the SAT, since extended time accommodations are easier to secure. Our tutors in Burlingame and Woodside build a personalized plan once the right test is identified.
Bay Area College Admissions Test Prep
Can’t decide between the SAT and the ACT? With more colleges reinstating test-score requirements and the SAT now fully digital, that decision matters more than ever. At Cardinal Education, we help Bay Area students cut through the confusion with personalized SAT and ACT prep built around each student’s actual strengths, not a generic class. Beyond content review, we teach real test-taking strategy and confidence, backed by full-length practice tests and expert guidance, so families can choose the right test and prepare for it with a clear plan instead of guesswork.
More universities, including MIT, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown, and UT Austin, are once again requiring standardized test scores after years of test-optional policies. Combined with the SAT’s March 2024 shift to a fully digital format, families have more to navigate than ever, which is exactly where working with an experienced test prep partner makes the difference.

Which Test is Right For You?
We recommend taking full-length SAT and ACT practice tests to get a real assessment of your skills before committing to one test. In general, if you’re not a strong reader, tend to lose focus, or are a slower test-taker, the SAT is often the better fit—and because it’s easier to secure extended time accommodations on the SAT, students with learning differences frequently benefit more from it than the ACT.
Still Not Sure Which Test Fits You Best?
A full-length diagnostic in both formats is the only way to know for sure—guessing costs months of misdirected prep. Schedule a consultation with a Cardinal Education advisor to get a real answer before you start studying.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How much time is needed to prepare for the SAT and ACT?
Depending on your needs, background, and desired score range, the time required to prepare for the ACT and SAT might range from three months to more than a year. The earlier you prepare, the better because you will have more time to brush up on the skills and areas you need to improve on. Additionally, taking individualized test prep classes is better because you will receive immediate feedback and individualized attention.
-
If a school is test-optional, should I still submit test scores?
Yes. Test scores will demonstrate your readiness to deal with a more challenging curriculum and convince admissions officers that you are a good fit for their community. Even during the pandemic when many colleges adopted and became test-optional, admissions officers still considered test scores because they were still the best indicators of a student’s success. Those who did not submit test scores lost opportunities for admission and scholarships.
-
When should I take the SAT or ACT?
We recommend that you take the SAT or ACT for the first time in the spring of your junior year of high school. This allows you to have enough time to retake the test if needed before college application deadlines.
-
How many times can I take the SAT or ACT?
You can take the SAT as many times as you want, and the ACT can be taken up to 12 times. Take full-length SAT and ACT practice tests until you are satisfied with the results and are confident enough to take the actual tests.
