Understanding the world of standardized tests can be a confusing process in your private school admissions journey. From the ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT, these tests play a critical part in your child’s chances of admission. So, how do you prepare your child so that they can obtain great scores?
First, it’s important to understand the difference between these tests. Your child may perform better in one compared to the others, so knowing which ones they should take is key to success. The SSAT, or Secondary School Admission Test, is administered by the Enrollment Management Association and focuses on areas like verbal skills, math, and reading comprehension. The ISEE, which stands for the Independent School Entrance Exam, is administered by the Educational Records Bureau and is quite similar to the SSAT, but is structured differently, including sections like quantitative reasoning and an essay that’s sent directly to the schools. The HSPT, or High School Placement Test, is common for Catholic schools and includes verbal skills, math, reading, and language.
In San Diego, the ISEE is the most common standardized test score required by elite private schools such as La Jolla Country Day School and Francis Parker School. Other schools, such as The Bishop’s School, accept both the ISEE and HSPT from applicants. Test-optional policies are also quite common, as seen by The Grauer School, which only takes in test scores if students choose to submit them.
Given the varying demands of these tests, it’s important to have a test prep strategy that’s tailored to your child’s specific needs. Most schools accept either SSAT or ISEE scores. The HSPT is not as common as it is typically a requirement for admissions to Catholic or Parochial schools. It’s important to take the test that will highlight your child’s skills. Here are some of the differences between these standardized tests:

How many times your child may take a standardized test depends on the test itself and its specific rules. The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is only offered to current 8th-grade students and may only be taken once, meaning there are no opportunities for retakes.
On the other hand, the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) and SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) have different policies. The ISEE can be taken up to three times in a single admissions cycle, once in each testing season (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer). The SSAT offers more flexibility, allowing students to retake the test multiple times, with up to eight administrations per academic year. It’s important to understand these guidelines when planning your child’s test preparation strategy to ensure they have the best chance of achieving their desired scores.
Which standardized test your child should take depends on both your child and the private school to which they will be applying to. If a school is test-optional, then we suggest that your child takes whichever test reflects their academic ability best. This is why practice tests are important in order to properly gauge test-taking strengths and weaknesses.
If a school is test-blind, we highly recommend still taking a standardized test, as it is common for families to apply to more than one private school at a time, and test-blind policies are not always commonplace. For schools that accept the ISEE, SSAT, or the HSPT, then, just like for test-optional schools, we highly recommend taking practice tests of each test in order to gauge which one highlights your child’s strengths. If your child is going to a Parochial school, then they should definitely take the HSPT
