Many families know the STAR Assessments as the tests students take a few times a year to track progress in the classroom. In 2023, the tests were updated with new norms and took on an important role as an admissions test for some private schools in the Bay Area.
The STAR Assessment is a computer-adaptive test that quickly pinpoints what your child knows in reading and math. This isn’t about passing or failing; it’s about getting a clear snapshot of their skills at present. And that snapshot is incredibly valuable for you, your child, and their teachers. It helps everyone understand their strengths and where they might need a little extra support.
So, how does the STAR test work? As your child answers questions, the test adjusts in real-time. If they get a question right, the next one gets a bit tougher. If they struggle, it eases up. This “adaptive scoring” is what makes the STAR Assessment so effective. It zeros in on their specific learning level for both Reading and Math, providing a much more accurate picture than a standard test. This means less time testing and more time learning, with results that truly reflect your child’s abilities.
Schools love the STAR Assessment because it gives them actionable data. Those scores are a key tool for placing students in the right classes and learning groups. It ensures that your child is challenged but not overwhelmed. But it doesn’t stop there. Teachers use these scores throughout the year to monitor progress. They can see what’s working and what’s not, allowing them to tailor their instruction to each student’s needs. It’s all about fostering growth and making sure every child has the opportunity to succeed.
If you’re looking at private schools in the Bay Area, you’ll likely come across the STAR Assessment as a part of the admissions process. Notably, schools like Menlo School in Atherton and Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley have incorporated it into their applications. While other schools in the area may also use it, these two are prominent examples. For these competitive schools, the STAR test provides a standardized way to gauge an applicant’s academic readiness, helping them build a well-rounded incoming class.
Several Bay Area private schools—including Castilleja and Kehillah in Palo Alto, Harker in San Jose, Pinewood in Los Altos, Drew and Nueva in San Francisco, Branson in Marin County, Marin Academy in San Rafael, and others—have used STAR test scores as part of their admissions process or academic evaluation in recent years. Since school policies can change from year to year, it’s important for families to review each school’s current requirements before applying.
We know that every child learns differently, which is why our approach to the STAR test prep is unique. Our tutors create a prep plan that fits your child, builds their confidence, and genuinely prepares them for test day.
Our diagnostic evaluation is a game-changer. It gives us a clear map of your child’s skills, showing us exactly where they shine and where they could use a little boost.
With one-on-one practice, we focus entirely on your child’s needs in Reading and Math. It’s personalized coaching that targets their specific gaps, turning “I can’t” into “I can.
Whether you prefer meeting online from the comfort of your home or coming in for in-person support, we make it work for your family.
We give your child smart and simple strategies that they can actually use.
A second-grader and a seventh-grader need very different things, right? That’s why our lessons are custom-fit. We tailor everything to your child’s age and grade, making the concepts stick whether they’re just starting out or gearing up for middle school.
Think of practice tests as a workout for the brain. They help build up testing stamina so your child doesn’t feel drained halfway through. The more familiar they get, the less intimidating the real test becomes. It’s a huge confidence booster!
We work on real-life skills, like how to manage time, stay focused, and, most importantly, believe in themselves. Our goal is to make them walk into test day feeling capable and calm, ready to show what they know.

We offer flexible scheduling because we know you’re busy. Online and In-person STAR Assessment Prep options are available.
You don’t actually register for the STAR Assessment if it’s part of the school’s program for checking in on student progress. They take care of the registration and let you know when and how your child will be taking the test, However, for schools like Menlo and Woodside Priory that require the STAR test as part of their admissions process, you need to sign up for the test through the Ravenna application portal after you start your application. The schools will host the test on their campus on specific dates you can choose from. If you’re applying to both Menlo and Woodside Priory, you only need to take one STAR test.

Workbooks can be helpful, but they can’t help you navigate the tricky spots. A workbook can’t adapt to your child when they’re struggling or cheer them on when they have a breakthrough. Our one-on-one coaching is all about that personal touch. We pinpoint the exact issue, build a lesson around it, and work on the confidence piece, which is something a book just can’t do.
Absolutely. We’ve found that with the interactive tools we use, online sessions can actually be more engaging than meeting in person. Our students are sometimes more comfortable and focused in their own space. At the end of the day, that one-on-one relationship with the tutor is what really matters, and you don’t lose any of that online. It really comes down to what’s more convenient for you.
This is something we put a ton of thought into because the right fit is everything. It’s not just about matching a math expert with a kid who needs math help. For us, it’s all about the right personality match. We look at your child as a whole person and consider their learning style, their quirks, and their interests. Then we find a tutor whom we’re confident they’ll connect with. It’s about finding that person who can challenge them, cheer them on, and make learning feel way less like a chore.
