What topics are covered on the ACT, and which sections do students struggle with most?

The ACT is divided into four main sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Essay. Each section has its own quirks. English focuses on grammar, punctuation, and style. Math includes algebra, geometry, and some basic trigonometry. Reading tests comprehension through four dense passages, and Science isn’t about memorizing biology terms, it’s also about interpreting graphs, experiments, and scientific data.

Most D.C. students find the Science and Reading sections the most challenging, not because of the content, but because of the speed. That’s why timing strategies are such a key part of our ACT prep program at Cardinal Education. We teach students how to pace themselves, what to skip, and how to stay focused from section to section. The result? Stronger scores, less stress, and a test-day experience that feels manageable—even empowering.
