The Evergreen School’s Fantastic After School Program

After School Programs are programs designed to enrich learners even after the school day has ended, it’s a simple concept that not many schools implement, despite the benefits it brings to young learners. The Evergreen School is one of the few institutions that realize the importance of programs like these, and it is a core part of the student life at Evergreen.

Why Are After-School Programs Important?

Engaging Students Beyond the Classroom

After School Programs are important in a lot of ways; they provide a safe and structured environment for students after the school day ends. But why not just let students off the hook? Why not just let students be free from school at the end of the day? Well, you certainly could but what do you think that free time is being used for? In our day and age, our kids are chronically online. There’s certainly no harm in spending a bit of time on social media or even video games. But what if they spent it on other, more productive things? After School Programs answers this with a slew of activities that are not only fun, but build on the child’s skills and guide the child’s behaviour.

Supporting Working Parents

These programs don’t only help students, but parents as well. The end of the school day doesn’t necessarily mean mom or dad are at home from work. With inflation off the roof, most of us parents are working double shifts to make ends meet. That means we would need to leave our kids unsupervised for practically hours each day. However, with the after-school programs, we can be rest assured that they’re being supervised by faculty and staff. Not only does this provide peace of mind, but it also ensures that children are engaged in meaningful activities rather than spending hours alone.

What Makes the After-School Program at Evergreen Different?

The Evergreen School’s after-school program stands out because of its comprehensive approach, offering both extended care and a wide selection of enrichment classes catering to various interests and age groups. For prekindergarten through 8th grade, after-school care is available from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Preschool students have extended care until 5:30 p.m. Additionally, morning care is offered for K-8 students starting at 7:00 a.m. Students are grouped by age during extended care, ensuring they engage in activities suited to their developmental stage.

Enrichment Classes

For students wanting more, enrichment classes full of a more comprehensive approach to activities are available to students and cater to whatever they are interested in. The school provides three sessions of after-school classes throughout the year: fall, winter, and spring. Some of the classes have been: Lego Engineering, Debate, and Parkour.

Lego Engineering fosters creativity and problem-solving skills by allowing students to build complex structures while learning fundamental engineering concepts. Debate enhances critical thinking, public speaking, and persuasive skills as students engage in structured arguments on thought-provoking topics. Parkour promotes physical fitness, agility, and confidence by teaching students how to navigate obstacles efficiently and safely. These diverse offerings ensure students can develop both intellectual and physical skills in a fun and supportive environment.

These are just 3 of the many classes offered! With so many exciting options, Evergreen’s after-school program provides a unique and holistic experience that makes every afternoon exciting for students!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No! Although most schools do offer academic-based activities, it’s most often a mix of different activities to give students a holistic experience. Art-based activities can enrich a child’s imagination and creativity, such as art classes or music sessions, while social development activities can help develop a child’s emotional intelligence, such as group projects or team-based activities. It’s also common for after school programs to host different kinds of physical activities such as sports. This holistic approach ensures that students are of course engaged in the program, gain confidence they need, and maybe even discover a new interest or hobby!

  • Participation in The Evergreen School’s enrichment classes is entirely optional. Students who prefer a more relaxed setting can opt for extended care, where they are provided with a supervised environment to complete homework, engage in free play, or participate in light activities. This option is particularly beneficial for students who may need downtime after a structured school day or those who prefer unstructured social interaction with peers. On the other hand, students who wish to explore new interests and develop specific skills can enroll in enrichment classes, which cover a wide range of subjects from arts and sciences to physical activities.

  • The Evergreen School’s after-school program is designed for students from prekindergarten through 8th grade, ensuring that each age group has access to age-appropriate activities and supervision. Younger students, including preschoolers, benefit from structured care that provides a nurturing environment for play, rest, and creative exploration. Older students in elementary and middle school have access to a wider variety of enrichment classes that focus on academic, artistic, and physical development, such as Lego Engineering, Debate, and Parkour. The program’s flexibility allows families to choose between extended care or enrichment activities, ensuring that every student finds an engaging and supportive after-school experience.
