Do summer programs for middle schoolers require an application or tryout?

Sometimes, but not always. Think of it like pizza toppings: some camps are laid-back cheese, while others are loaded with everything and expect a little more prep. Academic programs may ask for a short application, a teacher recommendation, or even a quick written response to get a sense of your child’s interests. Athletic camps, especially elite ones, might ask for game footage or previous experience. But don’t let that scare you. These aren’t Ivy League admissions. If your middle schooler is excited, engaged, and open to learning, they’ll likely be a strong fit. And remember, even if a camp has a “tryout” or screening, it’s usually about placement, not perfection. They want your kid to have the right fit, too.
