Are residential (overnight) camps appropriate for middle schoolers?

Absolutely, assuming your child is ready to brush their teeth without you reminding them three times. Residential camps can be a fantastic way for middle schoolers to stretch their wings, make friends, and get a taste of independence in a safe, supervised environment. Most of these programs offer structure, supportive counselors, and activities that keep kids so busy they barely notice they’re away from home. Homesickness? It happens. But most campers adjust within a day or two, especially when distracted by frog dissections, tie-dye night, or pickup basketball games. If your kid can survive a school sleepover or a weekend at Grandma’s, they’ll probably thrive in an overnight camp. Plus, they’ll come back with stories. Lots of them.
