Overview of the Landmark School

Located in Massachusetts, Landmark School is a private co-ed day and boarding school for grades 2-12 for students with language-based learning differences. With an empowering approach to education, the school encourages its over 470 students to reach their academic and social potential through individualized programs. Founded in 1971, Landmark School has been offering small class sizes and a 3:1 student-teacher ratio to ensure that students receive the most help and learning opportunities possible. Separated into two campuses, high school students enjoy the coast on the 27-acre campus in Prides Crossing. Elementary and middle school students enjoy the 18-acre campus located in a historic estate in Manchester.

How hard is it to get into Landmark School?

Admissions into Landmark School may be difficult. In ensuring that they are providing children with the best specialized care and education possible, only a certain number of slots are available every school year. With a current student body of around 470 across grades 2–12, Landmark School may only open a handful of slots. It’s expected that those who apply late in the year may not be admitted even if they qualify due to a lack of open spaces. Additionally, students who do not fit the diagnostic criteria for the language-based learning disabilities that Landmark supports may be rejected on the basis that the school may not offer the appropriate support for a child.  

Landmark School Application

The application process begins by submitting the inquiry form on their website to let the school know your intention of applying. They will then email you with any additional information needed and inform you of these steps:  

1. Complete and submit the application form.
2. Consolidate diagnostic testing requirements.
3. Delegate teachers who will write recommendation letters. 
4. Request recommendation letters from the counselor or principal.
5. Request a transcript from your current school.
6. Write your student statement. 
7. Schedule an admissions interview.

Landmark School Admissions 

Diagnostic Testing

Diagnostic testing is required to prove eligibility for Landmark School. This includes a full narrative report of your child’s language-based learning disability. They must have been taken within the last three years and include a cognitive assessment (Wechsler IQ scales), academic achievement testing, and an assessment of psychosocial functioning. Any other tests, such as speech and language or occupational therapy evaluations, should be submitted as well.

Letters of Recommendation

After filling up the online application form, applicants will be sent the Landmark School’s letters of recommendation form. Students must submit at least two references. These may come from their current principal or school guidance counselor, English teacher, math teacher, tutor, and/or specialist, and if applicable, the residential advisor. 

Imperative to a good letter of recommendation is a good relationship with the previous school. You should do your best to build this relationship as teachers give a thorough evaluation of your child’s character, personality, and academic aptitude. This will serve as a blurb for Landmark School to judge whether your child will be a good fit for them.

Transcript

A student transcript is an incredibly important aspect of the application process, as it showcases your child’s academic readiness. Landmark requires official school records for the previous school year and the current one. This includes transcripts, report cards, IEP/504s, and, if applicable, progress reports.

Admissions Essays

Students must complete a writing sample and questionnaire for the admissions counselors to read and consider the student’s character and writing proficiency. Personal statements are also an avenue for students to showcase what they will bring as bright and promising future leaders. However, students may struggle to put pen and paper and get their wonderful ideas out, which is why our services include writing and editing student essays and content, and we can help students brainstorm ideas to write about. 

Admissions Interview

If the board believes your student meets the requirements of admission into Landmark School, they will contact your family to schedule a placement screening, interview, and tour. While this is an opportunity for your family to ask questions about the school, the tour and interview will also allow admissions officers to gauge whether your child will fit the Landmark School community.

Landmark School Support for Language-based Learning Disabilities

The Landmark School has made it its mission to provide support to students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. Students who have struggled with traditional methods of education may find that the individualized nature of the Landmark School environment is one that will advocate for their empowerment and independence. There are daily one-to-one blocks wherein a teacher’s full attention is on a student. Emphasized as well is a structured daily routine that includes a dedicated reading block that is flexible but ensures the development of discipline and self-reliance.  

Student Life at Landmark School

Students at the Landmark School are encouraged to not let their disabilities hold them back. The school offers a wide range of possibilities that encourage them to follow their interests and passions. From enriching classes to incredibly fun activities, there are heaps for students to do. Beyond academics, students can participate in clubs, arts programs, and sports, contributing to a well-rounded experience. 

Furthermore, summer at Landmark is an exciting program that engages both students both academically and developmentally. With the goal of reducing learning loss over the break, one can expect to have fun in a way that reinforces skills learned during the school year. The summer program also offers unique opportunities for enrichment and exploration. It provides a chance for students to connect with peers, build friendships, and continue their learning journey in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. 

Landmark School Academics

The Landmark Academic Model is based on three academic programs that remediate language skills. The Founders Program offers language arts, math, science, social science, and electives every year, including an additional 4-year course based on individual needs in either literature, reading, or study skills. The Expressive Language Program offers a two-year oral expression or social communication course, and there is no science course required in sophomore year or a social science course in freshman year. Additionally, the extra courses for individual needs include a 3-year reading course or a senior-year study skills course. The Prep Program offers all of the same courses, but the difference is that organizational strategies and study skills are integrated into all subject areas. These programs create a balanced experience that builds up students holistically.

Landmark School Athletics

Students have a variety of sports to choose from to suit their passions. Winter sports sign-ups start in mid-October, while sign-ups for the spring term happen in February. Some of the sports students may enjoy are baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, sailing, tennis, and more. There are countless fields and courts for students to use as they train and push themselves beyond their physical limits. The school’s athletic philosophy pushes students to think off the field, extending sportsmanship not just to their competitors but to the world around them. 

Landmark School Arts

At Landmark, students can foster their artistic passions through a wide range of opportunities. At the elementary and middle school campuses, students may take electives such as Art of the Imagination, Makers’ Studio, and Practical Arts. At the high school campus, students are given more agency to pursue their interests. The Industrial Arts Department, Performing Arts Department,  STEAMWorks Department, and Visual Arts Department all offer hands-on engaging electives that hope to develop confidence and talent. 

Activities at Landmark School

Students at the Landmark School have a variety of activities that they’re encouraged to engage in. There are after-school activities, clubs, and even community engagement opportunities. Students more physically inclined may participate in mountain biking, rock climbing, and even yoga. Those who want to develop their character more may join clubs such as debate or peer leaders. While those itching to interact with those outside of the Landmark School may consider volunteering through organizations such as Adopt-a-Highway, Tot Spot, Hardscape Rehab, and more.
