Student Life at Sugar Bowl
Sugar Bowl Academy is a world-class ski academy filled with the perfect balance of mental and physical tests, science and snow, as well as algebra and altitude. Training and competing at the highest level while dealing with a full college preparatory course load is nowhere near easy. Sugar Bowl strives to stay in balance between academics and athletics. It follows a well-thought-out and carefully designed school calendar to maximize learning in and out of the classroom. To maintain order, Sugar Bowl has a bedtime set at 10:30 PM during weeknights and 11:00 PM during weekends. Seniors, on the other hand, get to stay out in the common area until 10:30 PM with lights out by 11:00 PM during weeknights.
Sugar Bowl Academics
Students at Sugar Bowl Academy are expected to comply with the highest academic performance standards. The SGA classroom encourages critical thinking while both challenging and supporting students. Every student must maintain, at the very minimum, a GPA of 2.00 to be allowed to continue enrollment. To graduate, all SBA seniors must complete a year-long senior project, where they will be required to craft a 10- up to 20-page research paper to be presented for a span of 20 to 30 minutes. Sugar Bowl uses a trimester-based school calendar to allow students more time for their skiing endeavors while fulfilling the NCAA core curriculum requirements for Freshman eligibility.
Sugar Bowl Activities
Sugar Bowl provides its students with fun community-building activities and programs to foster supportive and strong bonds between the student-athletes and staff. The school allocates time once a week during Clubs Block to encourage its students to discover their passions and intellectual curiosities.
During weekends in the fall and spring, the SBA staff offers an engaging activity for its students. Last year, the school offered a wide array of activities, including dinner and movie nights, bowling, mini golf, UNR football games, laser tag, and go-karting. There are also a variety of on-campus activities during weekdays and on Friday nights. This includes a Super Bowl party, trivia night, cookie decorating, gingerbread house decorating, easter egg decorating, and pumpkin carving.
Sugar Bowl Athletics
Sugar Bowl Athletics promotes hard work and perseverance. It fosters a positive environment, emphasizes lifelong athletic development, and challenges student-athletes while empowering them to go beyond their limits. Athletic staff members utilize a myriad of tools to provide personalized instruction, competition plans, and training to each student-athlete. At Sugar Bowl, coaches and trainers make full use of the latest and science-based methods to make sure that every preparation opportunity and training is at its maximum potential. Sugar Bowl Academy offers year-round training, Nordic Youth Sky Running, Biathlon, and a Nordic post-graduate program.
Sugar Bowl Arts
The Sugar Bowl Academy offers both visual and performing arts courses, which include Studio Art and Drama. In Studio Art, students discover and learn about different mediums to familiarize themselves with the foundations of the visual arts. Some mediums include charcoal, watercolor, acrylic paint, pencil, and ink drawings. Sugar Bowl’s drama elective, on the other hand, focuses on the applications and historical development of drama and theater. Students get to participate in responding to vocal, visual, and physical sensory information so they will be well-equipped to interpret, perform, and dramatic pieces.
