About the School

A Different Question Than “Can She Get In?”

Asian American families applying to Los Angeles independent schools have usually solved the academic question long before they start touring campuses. The transcript is strong. The test scores, where a school wants them, are strong. The harder question is what happens in year three, when a girl who has been told her whole life that excellence is the point has to decide what she actually cares about.

That is a useful lens for evaluating Marlborough specifically. The school admits without an interview and without required test scores, which strips away two of the places a high-achieving applicant would normally demonstrate strength. What Marlborough asks for instead is evidence of character and self-direction. For families accustomed to competing on measurable outputs, that is a genuine shift in what the application rewards.

Affinity and Belonging at Marlborough School

Twenty-four percent of Marlborough students identify as Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander. That figure matters less than what the school has built around it. Marlborough supports twelve identity-based student groups, three of which are directly relevant to Asian American families.

PATH (Promoting Togetherness and Heritage)

Students who identify as Asian American and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander

SAVA (South Asian Violets Association)

Students who identify as South Asian

MIX (Mixed-Race and Transracial Adoptee Community)

Mixed-race students and transracial adoptees

The distinction between PATH and SAVA is worth noticing. Plenty of schools run a single pan-Asian club and consider the box ticked. Marlborough separates them, which suggests the groups were formed by students who wanted different things rather than assembled by an administrator working from a demographic chart. These groups organize events, build community and function as a leadership pipeline into the All-School Council, the Pushing Perspectives speaker series and the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, which Marlborough sponsors students to attend.

Why the All-Girls Setting Changes the Calculation

For many Asian American families the single-sex question is the one they have thought least about. It deserves attention. In a school where every leadership position, every robotics team slot and every debate captaincy is held by a girl, the pattern where a capable student defers in a mixed classroom simply has nowhere to operate. Marlborough runs five competitive robotics teams and has earned three world-championship-level awards, which is worth weighing against the broader picture in our piece on women in STEM and the stereotypes that persist. If you are comparing formats, our overview of single-sex schools with innovative programs is a reasonable place to start.

The Marlborough Application, and Where Asian American Applicants Get Tripped Up

Top Tips for Applying

  • Resist the instinct to optimize the Character Skills Snapshot. It measures traits, not knowledge, and an over-rehearsed profile reads as inconsistent against teacher recommendations.
  • Let your daughter name her own interests in the written portions, even if they are not the ones you would have chosen for her.
  • Pick recommenders who have seen her struggle productively. A letter about a girl who earned an A is less useful than one about a girl who rebuilt an approach that was not working.
  • Do not treat the absence of a required test score as a gap to fill. Marlborough means it.
  • Check the residency and I-20 rules before you invest in the application. Marlborough does not issue I-20s and does not run an ESL program.

Best Practices for Families

  • Have the harder conversation early about why this school, in language your daughter would use herself.
  • Visit on October 17 and let her talk to students without you standing there.
  • Look at the affinity groups as a real data point about community, not a brochure feature.
  • Apply to an entry grade. Grades 7 and 9 are where the doors are genuinely open.
  • Keep the family narrative honest. Admissions readers in Los Angeles have read a great many immigrant-striving essays and can tell which ones are true.

What the Application Asks For

  1. 01Initial Application via Ravenna

The inquiry and initial application go through Ravenna and open your daughter’s file. Everything else follows from it. We support families through the portal and the written components as part of our application guidance.

  2. 02Character Skills Snapshot

Required of every applicant. Roughly 25 minutes, built by the Enrollment Management Association, and focused on curiosity, resilience, teamwork and self-management. Because Marlborough collects no interview and no test score, this is a disproportionately large share of what the committee sees. We explain how admissions offices interpret Snapshot results so students can be candid rather than performative.

  3. 03Three Recommendation Forms

A school administrator, a current English teacher and a current math teacher, all delegated through the portal. Families whose daughters are strongest in math sometimes lean on that recommendation and neglect the English one. Marlborough reads both, and a lopsided pair invites exactly the assumption you do not want.

  4. 04Official Transcript

Submitted by the family. If a transcript reflects a student carrying more than she can sustainably manage, that is worth addressing before the application rather than after. Our executive function coaching and learning differences support exist for exactly that gap.

  5. 05Testing

Neither the ISEE nor the SSAT is required at Marlborough. If other schools on your list require one, we offer private school test preparation, but no score is expected here and none is missed.

How Cardinal Education Helps Asian American Families

We have spent close to twenty years working with Asian American families across Los Angeles, and the most valuable thing we do is usually not application strategy. It is helping a capable student articulate what she wants in terms that are hers. Marlborough’s process, stripped of interviews and test scores, happens to reward exactly that. Families wanting the general overview should see our Marlborough School Admissions Consulting page.
