Why are colleges reducing or eliminating legacy admissions?

Colleges are turning away legacy admissions more and more in order to support fairness and equity. Legacy preferences—which give candidates with family links to the university an unfair advantage—often benefit rich people. This approach can impede initiatives to establish an inclusive admissions system that actually prioritizes skill and ability. Eliminating legacy admissions helps institutions level the playing field so that every applicant—from all backgrounds—has equal opportunity. This change lets institutions give academic performance, varied points of view, and general potential top priority instead of family ties. Reducing legacy admissions lets universities create a more fair and representative student body.
