Overview

The Winchendon School ranking remains one of the top 20% of private schools in New York. Offering classes from Grades 9-12, this preparatory school has two campuses: a boarding school on a hilltop in Massachusetts, 60 miles away from Boston, and a campus at the center of Manhattan, New York. At Winchendon NY, the average class size is composed of around 7-9 students in line with a student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1. Micro-classes rarely have lectures or busywork, as students actively lead discussions and be engaged. Such an experience is a testament to the school’s personalized learning environment. In a tight-knit and supportive community, teachers are deeply familiar with a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and preferred learning styles. The Winchendon School NYC is also known for inspiring students to develop their interests outside of the classroom, whether by exploring the city or even pursuing job experiences. That’s the Winch Difference: delivering high-impact learning by shaping learning programs around students and their passions.

How hard is it to get into The Winchendon School?

With personalized academics, extensive extracurriculars, and expert college counseling, The Winchendon School is highly sought after by parents and their children alike. One of the biggest highlights of the school is its small, intimate class sizes and the one-on-one sessions with advisors who help students learn both within and beyond the classroom. Furthermore, the Winchendon School as a private high school has a high success rate of sending graduates to elite institutions for higher education, particularly Ivy League colleges.

The two Winchendon School campuses vary in their acceptance rates depending on location, but both are relatively similar in being selective and difficult to get into. The Winchendon School MA has an acceptance rate of 35% in comparison to the national average of 71%. In addition, the Winchendon School NYC has a 50% acceptance rate. While this might seem high at first glance, it’s actually on the lower end of acceptance rates in comparison to the average New York private school acceptance rate of 79%.

The Winchendon School Admissions

Admissions Interview

Applicants are required to schedule a visit or interview with The Winchendon School, and we highly encourage going for both! By scheduling a campus visit, aspiring students can receive a firsthand experience of the learning environment and community they will potentially be a part of. Furthermore, visiting the campus gives students the opportunity to meet with faculty and admissions officers.

The interview with an admissions officer is typically conducted face-to-face but it can also be arranged virtually according to the family’s convenience. This interview will help the Winchendon School gauge whether your child has the potential to be an ideal member of the school community. Admissions officers will be assessing not only how your child communicates their ideas, but also how they conduct themself in a formal setting and show their personality throughout the interview process. With interview preparation from our admissions consultants, your child will become an expert at authentically answering common interview questions and aligning with the Winch Difference.

Transcript

Applicants to the Winchendon School are all required to submit transcripts of the previous two school years, and these can be official or unofficial. In addition, the student must also submit their current report card for the ongoing school year.

Transcripts and report cards help admissions officers determine whether a potential student is capable of handling the Winchendon School’s rigorous curriculum. If your child’s grades are less than outstanding, we strongly recommend considering working with our expert tutors and coaches to level up their academics. Decent grades are not enough to guarantee your child is up to par with the Winchendon School’s standards, and we are here to develop your child not only academically but in terms of their soft skills as well!

Teacher Recommendation Letter and Character Reference

There are two kinds of letters a student must submit along with their application: one recommendation letter from any teacher, and one character reference from any adult other than a teacher. Recommendation letters are crucial and could make or break an application, given that they offer insight into your child’s character, work ethic, and demeanor both in and out of an academic setting. Furthermore, these anecdotes will come from an adult’s perspective, so admissions officers will be very particular in reading recommendation letters.

Building strong relationships with teachers and mentors outside of school is crucial if you want them to be able to provide strong recommendations. Their insights must also support other application materials when the time comes for them to do so.

Why Winch Output

This is a part of the application where a candidate can get to be as creative as they’d like! The Winchendon School wants to get to know students—are they content creators, writers, or painters? Where do their talents lie? In the application form, the student must upload a file of an output that conveys their personality. There are no particular guidelines, so the submission can range from a brief TikTok video to a clip of someone playing their favorite instrument. A student must think out of the box, discerning how their skills show why the Winchendon School is the best fit for them.

Someone could be a newspaper editor, club president, student government leader, and e-sports manager all at once! All of this and more is possible through the ever-evolving clusters: Leadership, Academic, Music, Athletic, and Affinity Groups. Much like Winchendon’s academic programs, activities continue expanding based on students’ preferences and newfound interests. Given this, student activities are unique to each campus and may not be offered regularly.
