Marlborough School is an independent, college-preparatory day school for girls in grades 7 through 12, located in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Founded in 1889 by Mary Caswell, it is the oldest independent girls’ school in Southern California. Roughly 530 students learn across two divisions on a single 110,000-square-foot campus, with an average class of 14 and a 7:1 student-faculty ratio. What Makes Marlborough’s Admissions Process Unique?
Marlborough asks for less than most peer schools, which counterintuitively raises the stakes on what it does ask for. There is no admissions interview. Standardized test scores are not required. There is no on-campus academic assessment. What remains is a transcript, three recommendations, and the Character Skills Snapshot, an EMA-built assessment of non-cognitive traits that every applicant completes. With fewer places to demonstrate fit, the Snapshot and the recommendations carry weight that a strong test score might absorb elsewhere. Families who treat the Snapshot as a formality tend to misread the process badly.
Top Tips for Applying
- Apply to an entry grade if you can. Grades 7 and 9 are the entry points; space in 8, 10 and 11 is extremely limited, and Marlborough does not admit seniors.
- Confirm your family lives in Los Angeles with the applicant. Marlborough enrolls only students living locally with a parent or legal guardian.
- Take the Character Skills Snapshot seriously without over-coaching it. Consistency between the Snapshot, the recommendations and the transcript is what reads as authentic.
- Choose recommenders who can speak to how your daughter behaves when a problem is hard, not just what grade she earned.
- Register for the October 17 Open House through Ravenna early. Demonstrated engagement is easy to show and easy to forget.
Best Practices for Families
- Start eighteen months out. Grades and teacher relationships that matter to a January application are built the previous spring.
- Write the parent portion in your own voice. Admissions readers see hundreds of these and recognise a ghostwritten one immediately.
- Visit with your daughter, not for her. Her read on the community matters more than yours.
- Be candid about learning differences rather than concealing them. Marlborough runs a Neurodivergent Affinity Club and has structures for support.
- Build a realistic list alongside Marlborough. Strong LA applicants typically apply to three to five independent schools.

01The Initial Application
Everything begins with an inquiry and initial application through Ravenna, Marlborough’s admissions portal. Submitting it opens your daughter’s file and unlocks the remaining requirements. 02The Character Skills Snapshot
Every Marlborough applicant completes the Character Skills Snapshot, a roughly 25-minute online assessment built by the Enrollment Management Association. It measures traits like intellectual curiosity, resilience, teamwork and self-control. It is not a test to cram for, and attempting to game it usually produces an internally inconsistent profile. We walk families through how schools actually read Snapshot results so students go in calm and self-aware rather than strategising.

03Recommendation Forms
Marlborough requires three: a school administrator, a current English teacher and a current math teacher. These are delegated through the application portal rather than mailed. Because there is no interview, these letters are the primary outside voice describing your daughter, which makes who you ask a genuinely strategic decision.

04Official Transcript
Families submit the official transcript as part of the application. Where a transcript shows uneven performance, the fix is rarely tutoring alone. Our academic coaching program works on the study systems and executive function skills that produce durable grade improvement rather than a single strong semester.

05Testing
ISEE and SSAT scores are not required for admission to Marlborough. Some families still choose to sit an exam to strengthen an application elsewhere on their list, and we offer ISEE preparation and SSAT preparation for that reason. For Marlborough specifically, a score is optional and its absence is not held against an applicant.
