Quick Answer for Busy Parents

Marlborough runs more than 90 student clubs, including twelve identity-based groups, alongside 12 sports across 36 teams. Equestrian is one of those sports. The year is structured by traditions with real history: the Ring Ceremony since 1933 and the Pin Ceremony since 1961. Days run on a rotating block schedule from 8:30 to 3:00, with weekly all-school meetings in Caswell Hall.

More Than 90 Clubs, and What Students Do With Them

Marlborough supports over 90 student clubs. Twelve of those are identity-based groups: the African American Cultural Exchange, Alliance, the Armenian Student Association, FAITH, Kehilah, MIX, MOSAIC, the Neurodivergent Affinity Club, Organized Latinx Exchange, PATH, the South Asian Violets Association and Transcend. These are student-led rather than administered from above, they organise events, and they function as a pipeline into school-wide leadership. Students who cannot find what they want can build it, and our step-by-step guide to starting a club walks through how that generally works.

Beyond clubs, students write and edit The UltraViolet, serve on the All-School Council, and run the Violets’ Giving Circle, a student-led philanthropic organisation that has raised $500,000 for organisations across Los Angeles. The Social Justice and Community Partnerships department connects students to twelve nonprofit and community partners in the city.

Traditions That Structure the Year

Marlborough’s traditions are unusually well documented, which is a useful signal in itself. These are not brochure inventions; several predate most current faculty.

Tradition Since What it marks
Ring Ceremony 1933 The junior class marking the passage into senior year
Pin Ceremony 1961 Ninth graders marking completion of Middle School
All-School Meetings Weekly The community gathering in Caswell Hall for speakers and class traditions
Community Pledge Annual Students recommitting collectively to shared expectations
Winter Fest Annual The school unwinding before winter break
Violets 101 At entry New students introduced to each other and to the school
New Family Celebration Each spring Incoming families welcomed before enrolment

The Pin Ceremony quietly tells you something structural. It happens in ninth grade because Marlborough’s Middle School runs through grade 9, with the Upper School covering grades 10 to 12. Families working from a standard 9-12 high school model routinely misread this, and it matters if you are considering entry outside the usual points of grades 7 and 9.

Athletics, Including the Equestrian Team

Marlborough competes as the Mustangs in 12 sports across 36 teams: basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo. Eighty student-athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level over the past ten years. Facilities include Booth Field, the Caryll Mudd Sprague Aquatic Center and the Kaplan Fitness Center. Families weighing athletics as part of an application should read our piece on competitive sports in private school admissions.

The equestrian team is the one that surprises people, and it is genuinely uncommon among Los Angeles independent schools. It sits alongside the other eleven sports as a full team rather than a club. Because riding happens off campus, and because programs of this kind vary year to year in coaching and competition schedule, families with a serious rider should ask the athletics office directly about the current season rather than relying on any third-party description, including this one.

Balancing a Full Schedule

The day runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on a rotating block, divided into four class blocks plus community time. Middle School students carry a minimum of six courses per semester; Upper School students a minimum of four academic courses, though most take five. Third-party sources put nightly homework at roughly three to four hours. Add a sport and a club or two and the week is full.

The school builds in support rather than assuming students will find their own. Every student sits in a grade-level advisory with a grade-level dean. Peers Are Listening and Student Council Wellbeing Representatives run peer support, and a Methodologies for Academic Success curriculum teaches seventh and eighth graders self-management and relationship skills. That last one is effectively a formal executive function program inside the school day, which is rarer than it sounds. Six bus routes covering more than 100 zip codes make the commute workable from most of the basin.

How Student Life Reads in an Application

Marlborough’s admissions file is short: an initial application through Ravenna, the Character Skills Snapshot, three recommendations and a transcript. No interview, no required test score. In a file that thin, evidence of sustained involvement in something specific is disproportionately visible, and scattered membership across many activities is not. Our guidance on how extracurriculars are actually read explains why depth outperforms breadth here.

Student life at Marlborough is not decoration around the academics. A student who spends four years editing a newspaper, riding competitively or running a giving circle will graduate having practised the things the school says it teaches. That is the part worth evaluating on a visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many clubs does Marlborough School have?
More than 90, including twelve identity-based student groups. Older guides citing 50-plus clubs are out of date. Students can also propose new clubs, and the school describes initiative as something it actively rewards.
Does Marlborough School have an equestrian team?
Yes. Equestrian is one of Marlborough’s 12 sports and is unusual among Los Angeles independent schools. Riding takes place off campus. Because the structure of such programs changes from season to season, families with a competitive rider should confirm current coaching and competition arrangements with the athletics office.
What are Marlborough's main traditions?
The Ring Ceremony, dating to 1933, marks the junior class moving into senior year. The Pin Ceremony, dating to 1961, marks ninth graders completing Middle School. The school also holds weekly all-school meetings in Caswell Hall, an annual Community Pledge, Winter Fest before the winter break, and Violets 101 orientation for new students.
Why are Marlborough students called Violets?
The violet was the school’s original mascot, predating the Mustang used in athletics. The name persists across school institutions including The UltraViolet newspaper, the Violets’ Giving Circle and Violets 101.
How do students manage academics alongside all this?
Through structure rather than willpower. Grade-level advisories, grade-level deans, a Dean of Student Life overseeing the extracurricular program, peer support through Peers Are Listening, and a formal academic-skills curriculum in seventh and eighth grade. The workload is real, with three to four hours of homework a night by third-party estimates, but the support around it is not an afterthought.
