Exam Overview
The Star Assessment, developed by Renaissance Learning, is a computer-adaptive standardized test that measures student proficiency in reading and math.
Unlike fixed-format exams, it adjusts difficulty in real-time based on student responses, providing a precise academic snapshot. Originally for classroom monitoring, it is now a required admission test for select competitive Bay Area private schools. The test features 34 multiple-choice questions for each section: reading and math, with no writing component.
Effective preparation focuses on strengthening underlying reasoning and comprehension skills rather than rote memorization, often involving diagnostic evaluations, practice tests, and targeted tutoring to build test-day stamina and mastery.
Adaptive Format
When students encounter a test that gets harder as they do better, they feel like they’re failing when questions become more difficult. They’re not. Harder questions mean they’ve performed well enough to earn them. Students who understand the adaptive logic before test day approach difficult questions differently from those who don’t.
Star Assessment scores reflect both the number of correct answers and the difficulty of the questions answered. Two students who answer the same number of questions correctly can receive different scaled scores depending on the difficulty of the questions they were routed to.

Because the test adapts in real time, two students of different ability levels will see different questions, but both receive scores on the same scale. Performance is measured by precision, not raw difficulty.
For competitive Bay Area private schools like Menlo School and Woodside Priory, scores above the 75th percentile are generally considered solid. The most competitive applicants tend to score at or above the 90th percentile. We set score targets based on each student’s specific schools and develops a preparation plan to reach them.
Bay Area Requirements
The Star Assessment is currently required for admissions at a number of competitive Bay Area private schools. Requirements can change year to year, so always verify directly with each school before applying.
Atherton, CA
Menlo requires the Star Assessment as part of its admissions process for both middle and upper school applicants. Testing is administered on-campus, and scores are submitted through the Ravenna portal. If you are applying to both Menlo and Woodside Priory, one Star test covers both schools.
Portola Valley, CA
Woodside Priory is a Benedictine college-preparatory school requiring the Star Assessment for admission. On-campus testing dates are available once an application has been initiated through Ravenna.
Los Altos, CA
Pinewood uses the Star Assessment results as part of its admissions evaluation. Families should confirm current testing requirements for the specific grade level they’re applying to directly with Pinewood’s admissions office, as policies can vary by entry grade.
