Deerfield structures its process in five published steps. Following them in order matters more here than at most schools, because step three cannot begin until step two is complete.

1. Inquire. Complete the inquiry form to request the viewbook and enter Deerfield’s system. Students in sixth grade and above can do this for a future cycle.
2. Start your application. Submit Part I, the Candidate Profile, through Gateway to Prep Schools. The application opens July 1. Once Part I is submitted, families receive access to the separate Deerfield Admission Portal.
3. Meet with us. Schedule the required interview, either on campus with a student-led tour or as a one-hour Zoom conversation with separate time for parents. Summer tours and information sessions run by appointment from late June through late August.
4. Take the standardized test. Sit the exam required for your grade level. Deerfield suggests October, November, or December, and notes that registration deadlines fall well before test dates.
5. Complete your application. Submit Parts II and III on Gateway, then work through the remaining items on the Deerfield Admission Portal checklist. Everything is due January 15.

Deerfield Academy Admissions Calendar and Key Events

Deerfield Academy Application Requirements

Required Standardized Test Scores

Deerfield requires all candidates to submit standardized test scores. This is the single most common piece of stale information circulating about the school, and it matters enough to state plainly.

The English proficiency requirement applies when English has not been the language of instruction for at least three years or is not the primary language spoken at home. SSAT, ISEE, and TOEFL results must be sent directly to Deerfield using school codes 2770, 220685, and 9577 respectively; the SSAT and ISEE writing samples travel with them. PSAT, SAT, and ACT results can come through the transcript or by email to the admission office. Three Pieces of Writing

Part II of the Gateway application is unique to Deerfield and asks for a short answer essay, a personal essay, and a graded essay. Applicants choose from Deerfield’s prompts and are told to share perspective, voice, and hopes for the future, straightforwardly or creatively. The graded essay must come from a current academic course and should include the teacher’s comments. Deerfield is unusually direct about what it wants here: a paper showing thoughtful commentary and the student’s effort to improve is more valuable than one that simply earned a high grade. That reframes the assignment entirely. The strongest submission is often a B-plus paper with a serious revision history, not the A. Recommendations and Grades

Grade submission differs by entry point. Ninth-grade applicants send the current first marking period plus last year’s grades. Tenth grade through postgraduate applicants send the current first marking period plus all previous high school grades. A student not currently enrolled in English or math should request the recommendation from last year’s teacher and notify the admission office. The Interview

Interviews are required and cannot be scheduled until Part I is complete. Three formats exist: an on-campus tour and interview running roughly two hours, an on-campus tour and group information session with Q&A, and a one-hour virtual interview on Zoom that includes time for parents to speak with an admission officer. A limited number of interviews are also offered at Ten Schools fairs in several cities. Deerfield recommends booking early and means it.

Supplemental Materials

Deerfield takes an unusually firm line here. Most applicants, it says, do not need to submit supplemental materials, and additional materials do not necessarily strengthen an application. Performing arts portfolios go through SlideRoom. Athletic videos go through the Media Links form in the applicant portal. Anything sent by email must follow the naming convention StudentLastName_StudentFirstName_ApplicationGrade_DocumentName. Duplicate, repetitive, or excessive submissions are not guaranteed review.

Is Deerfield really not test-optional?

Correct. Deerfield states that it requires all candidates to submit standardized testing as part of its holistic admission process. Several of its closest peers remain test-optional, which is why the confusion persists.

What if my child tests in January?

The application is still considered in the regular cycle, but only once scores arrive. Deerfield recommends October through December precisely to avoid that lag.

Which graded essay should my child submit?

Student Life at Deerfield Academy

Academics

Deerfield has moved away from Advanced Placement teaching over the past several years. Official AP courses remain only in mathematics, the arts, and AP Seminar. Many courses use college-level texts, match the pace of an undergraduate course, or sit at a post-AP level where the Honors or AP course is the prerequisite. Students still sit AP exams independently: in the 2024 to 2025 year, 317 students took 718 exams and 95% earned a score of 3 or higher. All eleventh-grade English courses are taught at an AP level and all twelfth-grade English at a post-AP level. Two distinction programs exist alongside the standard curriculum: the Classical Studies Program, which combines Latin or Greek coursework with Classics Club participation, and the Music Distinction Program, which requires music enrollment from tenth through twelfth grade plus a senior capstone project. Students moving into this kind of workload from a conventional school often benefit from academic coaching before arrival rather than after the first difficult trimester.

Activities

A cocurricular commitment is required of every student every term, roughly two hours each weekday afternoon under faculty supervision. Beyond that, clubs are student-founded and numerous. The Deerfield Scroll, the student newspaper, was founded in 1925. Albany Road is the literary and arts magazine, publishing at least three times a year and hosting coffee houses. The Pocumtuck is the yearbook and The Deerfield Scrawl is the satirical paper. Math Club runs the annual Deerfield Math Competition for regional middle schoolers and sends teams to the Harvard-MIT and Princeton tournaments. Science Club prepares for Science Olympiad and Science Bowl and supports students sitting the biology, chemistry, and physics olympiads. Elsewhere: the Asian Student Alliance, Model United Nations, Classics Club and its certamina teams, Focal Point for STEM writing, Ya Hala for Arabic language and culture, Active Minds for mental health advocacy, the D-Apiary beekeeping club registered with the county and state beekeepers associations, Investment Club, Robotics Club, and a fly fishing club. A club fair each fall exists for joining, and students who want something that does not exist are told to start it.

Athletics

Deerfield fields 30 varsity interscholastic teams across 20 sports and competes in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference. The roster includes alpine skiing, baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, ultimate, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Most students meet their cocurricular requirement through athletics at the varsity, junior varsity, or recreational level. Arts

The Hess Center for the Arts anchors visual and performing arts. Deerfield teaches architecture, dance, film and video, music, photography, studio art, and theater as full disciplines, and the von Auersperg Gallery shows work on campus. Two trimesters of visual or performing arts are required to graduate, and any student may add an arts course as a sixth pass-fail class in a trimester. Residential Life

All ninth graders live in the Ninth Grade Village, a deliberate structure that gives the youngest students their own community before they join the wider one. Senior proctors mentor younger students in the upper dorms and peer counselors trained by the Health Center provide additional support. Family-style meals bring students and faculty to the same table. Deerfield has announced that it will become a fully boarding school in the fall of 2027, when a new West Campus Dorm with 38 student rooms opens and local students join the residential program. Deerfield runs two summer programs: DASAC, the Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp, and EXP. Neither is an admissions pathway, and no one should treat attendance as a credential.
