Is Online School Right for Your Child? Inside AEON School’s Live Seminars and Flex Program

November 2, 2026 4 min read

Quick Answer for Busy Parents

AEON School, formerly Avenues Silicon Valley and Avenues Online, teaches Grades 5–12 entirely online in live classes of 10 to 15 students. It works best for curious, self-directed students, especially those with serious commitments in athletics, the arts, or competitions, thanks to its Flex Program. Families who want in-person connection can join or form an AEON Pod, a small local group that learns together each day.

How AEON’s Live Online Classes Work

AEON isn’t a self-paced video course. Students log in to live classes of 10 to 15 peers drawn from 26 countries, and the core of the day is Great Works, an interdisciplinary program where students read whole Great Books and debate them. Math Inquiry follows a problem-based model built on Phillips Exeter Academy materials, and Global Passport teaches six world languages through real tasks. Projects and progress live on Leonardo, AEON’s all-in-one platform. The result feels more like a seminar table than a lecture hall, which is exactly why fit matters.

Who Thrives in an Online Seminar

In our experience, success online depends less on intelligence than on habits. Here’s how we help families read the signs.

Likely to Thrive at AEON May Need More Support First
Starts work without being reminded Relies on a teacher nearby to stay on task
Enjoys debating ideas out loud Prefers to stay quiet in group settings
Has a passion that needs schedule flexibility Wants a traditional campus routine
Comfortable keeping track of deadlines Still building executive function skills

None of the right-hand column rules a child out. It simply means building skills like executive function before, or alongside, the move.

The Flex Program, Mastery, and J-Term

Flex Program

AEON’s Flex Program is designed for students balancing training or performance with academics, including athletes, artists, and competitors. Rather than penalizing absences or piling on makeup work, it gives these students real flexibility. AEON also partners with schools, including Avenues: The World School in New York City, that host Flex students while AEON provides the curriculum, platform, and teachers.

Mastery

Mastery is a selective, credit-bearing course for high schoolers with strong academic standing. Each student designs an independent project with a faculty advisor, from a screenplay to climate tech research.

J-Term

Two mini-terms, one in January and one in June, offer deep dives, advanced intensives, and in-person gatherings for families and peers.

Staying Connected: AEON Pods

The biggest worry parents raise about online school is isolation. AEON’s answer is the Pod: families who live near each other form a small group whose students learn together in person each day, often supervised by an on-site Learning Guardian such as a parent or local educator. AEON helps form the group, onboard families, and launch it. For families also considering Stanford Online High School or other online options, Pods are one of AEON’s clearest differences.

Making the Online School Decision

Online school can be a gift for the right student and a struggle for the wrong one. We help families think this through before applying, whether that means joining mid-year, forming a Pod, or building independence first.
