Quick Answer for Busy Parents
ASIJ opens applications in mid-November for the following August, and decisions usually begin in late February or early March. Families new to Japan who arrive mid-year should ask about seat availability before applying, but families already living in Tokyo can’t transfer mid-year. ASIJ also requires that at least one parent be fluent in English and gives priority to students who need an English-medium education.
The ASIJ Admissions Calendar
| Milestone | Timing | What to Do |
| Applications open | Mid-November 2026 | Open your Veracross account and start the online form |
| Mid-year report cards | Often January | Send current reports when available |
| Decisions begin | Late February/early March | Watch for decisions, which continue through summer |
| First day | August | ASIJ’s year runs August to June |
If your relocation date is set for summer, starting your application in November gives you the strongest timeline.
Mid-Year Moves: Newcomers vs. Tokyo Residents
ASIJ treats these two situations very differently. If you’re newly moving to Japan with school-aged children, ASIJ asks you to inquire about seat availability before you start an application. If your family already lives in Tokyo, though, ASIJ doesn’t allow mid-year transfers; you’ll apply in November for the following August. Either way, a move in the middle of the school year takes planning for your child as well as the paperwork.
Planning a Move to Tokyo?
We help families time applications, confirm grade placement, and prepare complete files.
Coming From a Calendar-Year School
Students from schools that run from January or February to November or December, as in Australia and New Zealand, are considered for the grade that extends their current school year. In practice, students applying for August enrollment apply for the grade they’re currently in, and students applying for January enrollment apply for the grade they’ve just completed. Confirming placement early avoids surprises when switching schools across hemispheres.
The English Requirements
For Students
ASIJ’s founding principle is serving students with an established need for an English-medium education, and it may request English screening before a decision. Language proficiency tests don’t count as the standardized test in your application.
For Parents
One or both parents must be fluent in English, since English is the medium for all communication at ASIJ.
Making Your Move Smoother
Relocation is stressful enough without guessing at admissions rules. We help relocating families plan the timeline, assemble records from schools abroad, and present their child clearly.
