Quick Answer for Busy Parents
Every AEON School student learns math through Math Inquiry, a problem-based curriculum modeled on materials developed at Phillips Exeter Academy. Starting in middle school, students with exceptional mathematical talent may apply to AEON’s highly selective Institute for Advanced Mathematics, which serves Grades 6–12 with advanced coursework, research publication mentorship, and a customized path toward a diploma in advanced mathematics.
Math Inquiry: How Every AEON Student Learns Math
At AEON, math class doesn’t start with a formula on the board. Math Inquiry is problem-based and inquiry-driven: students work through carefully sequenced problems, collaborate, and seek not just answers but a deep understanding of the principles behind them. It’s the same philosophy behind Phillips Exeter’s well-known approach, delivered in live online classes of 10 to 15 students, and it builds a strong STEM foundation for every learner, not only the most advanced.
Inside the Institute for Advanced Mathematics
AEON describes the Institute as the only program in the world that unites exceptional math students in Grades 6–12 through a global community, advanced coursework, research publication mentorship, and a customized path to a diploma in advanced mathematics. Students study mathematical breakthroughs from 17,000 BCE to the present, building an understanding of why modern mathematics works, not just how.

Is Your Child Outgrowing Their Math Class?
We help math-talented students find programs that stretch them and present that talent clearly in applications.
Is Your Child a Fit for the Institute?
Signs of Readiness
- Your child seeks out hard problems for fun and sticks with them.
- They’ve moved well past their grade-level math sequence.
- They enjoy explaining their reasoning, not just reaching an answer.
- They show curiosity about where mathematical ideas came from.
How to Show It in the Application
Because AEON doesn’t require entrance testing, the evidence lives in your child’s records, teacher evaluation, interview, and optional supplements. Math competitions, research, and independent projects can strengthen a portfolio, and a math teacher who has watched your child wrestle with hard problems makes an ideal evaluator. Thoughtful course choices before applying help, too.
When to Apply
The Institute accepts students starting in middle school, so math-talented applicants entering Grades 5–8 should ask about it during their first admissions conversation.
Helping a Math-Talented Child Thrive
Exceptional math students need challenge, community, and someone who sees their potential. We help families position that talent well in AEON’s application, and we pair students with academic coaching when they’re ready to push further.
