Choate Rosemary Hall is a coeducational boarding and day school in Wallingford, Connecticut, enrolling 859 students across grades nine through twelve plus a postgraduate year. The school traces to two separate foundings, Mary Atwater Choate’s school for girls in 1890 and Judge William Gardner Choate’s school for boys in 1896, which combined into a single coeducational institution in the 1970s. Choate publishes a full admission events calendar that updates through the fall. Because so much of the cycle depends on showing up early, we generally advise families to treat the campus visit as a scheduling priority rather than something to slot in over winter break.
What Makes Choate Rosemary Hall Admissions Unique?
Most selective schools say they read holistically. Choate makes that concrete by refusing to publish minimums at all, and by weighing how a student will live in a residential community as heavily as how they will perform in a classroom. Roughly three quarters of the student body boards. The committee is not only asking whether your child can handle the coursework. It is asking who your child becomes at ten at night in a dorm, and whether the community is better for having them in it.

Top Tips for Applying
- Submit the Inquiry Form early. It is what generates the interview invitation, and the interview window closes in February.
- Treat the interview as the one shot it is. Choate accommodates one per applicant and does not offer a second.
- Decide on testing deliberately rather than by default. Optional means optional, but it also means a submitted score is a choice the committee will notice.
- Give recommenders lead time and context, not just a deadline.
- Let your child sound like a fifteen-year-old. Polish that reads as adult-written is the most common way a strong file loses its edge.

- Read the school’s Statement of Character before writing anything. It tells you what Choate is actually selecting for.
- Have your child research two or three signature programs specifically, not the school in general.
- Prepare the parent statement as seriously as the student essays. Choate is evaluating family fit alongside student fit.
- If your child lives in Connecticut, think through day versus boarding early, since it shapes the whole application.

01Applicant Essays and the Parent Statement
Part 2 of the Gateway application consists of the applicant essays and a parent statement. The essays are where a student stops being a transcript. The parent statement is where a family either demonstrates real understanding of its own child or produces a list of accomplishments the committee has already read on the transcript. We spend a great deal of time on both, because boarding school essays work differently from day school essays and most families do not realize it until late.

02Recommendation Letters
Choate requires a Principal or Counselor Recommendation alongside the Transcript Report, plus recommendations from your child’s current English and mathematics teachers. Two optional recommendations are also accepted: a third teacher recommendation, which may come from a current or previous teacher, and a personal recommendation from an adult who knows your child well and can speak to character. Optional does not mean ignored. Who your child asks, and how, matters more than most families expect.

03Transcripts
Choate asks for current grades alongside the academic record from the last two years. Applicants already in grades nine through twelve should also have their counselor submit the high school profile sheet where one exists. The committee reads for trajectory, not just level, so an upward line through a demanding course load reads better than a flat line through a comfortable one.

04Standardized Testing
Choate is test-optional. If your child chooses to submit, ninth and tenth grade applicants send SSAT or ISEE scores; eleventh grade applicants may also submit PSAT, SAT or ACT. Postgraduate applicants submit SAT or ACT. Non-native English speakers, and students who have not spent at least two years in an English-medium school, are strongly encouraged to submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results. The real question is not whether Choate requires a score. It is whether submitting one helps your particular child, and that is answerable with a diagnostic rather than a guess.

05The Admission Interview
Interviews run September through February, take 45 minutes, and are conducted entirely online. There are no in-person interviews, on campus or otherwise. The first 20 to 25 minutes are one-on-one with the student; the remainder is available for parents. Every interviewer’s assessment carries equal weight. The online-only format changes the preparation meaningfully, which is why we treat remote interview practice as its own skill rather than a variation on the in-person version.
