Ask a Peninsula family why Menlo is on their list and you will usually hear some version of the same answer: it is academically serious without being punishing about it. That distinction matters. Many of the families we work with have watched a bright child get flattened by an environment that measured everything and understood nothing. Menlo, founded in 1915 and now enrolling roughly 845 students in grades 6 through 12 on a single Atherton campus, is built around a phrase it uses constantly, which is that learning should be enjoyed. Sixty percent of its students identify as students of color. Whether that translates into your child feeling known is a harder question, and it deserves a real answer rather than a brochure one.

This is where Menlo distinguishes itself, and it is worth being specific rather than gesturing at diversity language. Menlo runs affinity spaces on three parallel tracks, which is unusual among Bay Area day schools of its size.

The parent track matters more than families expect. A school where Asian American parents have an organized, faculty-advised space of their own is a school where your questions during your child’s first difficult year have somewhere to go. Menlo’s student groups also program outward: the South Asian Affinity Group hosts a Holi social open to the wider community, and the school has run admissions-season dinners for specific communities, including a gathering for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families.
Menlo does not publish enrollment broken out by individual ethnic group. Any specific Asian American percentage you encounter on a third-party site is an estimate, not a school-confirmed figure, and we would rather tell you that than hand you a number we cannot stand behind.

Menlo runs Parent Information Sessions, weekend Preview Days, required student visits and interviews, and on-campus STAR Assessment sessions between October and January. Sixth grade visits are scheduled on a rolling basis from late September through mid-October and again in December, with none in November. Registration for everything runs through Ravenna and fills quickly.
The Part of Menlo’s Process That Catches Families Off Guard
Most Peninsula families build a testing plan around the ISEE or the SSAT and apply that score across a slate of schools. Menlo breaks that plan. The school requires its own STAR Assessment, administered on campus or at a peer school that offers it during fall 2026, and it will not accept other standardized test results from local applicants. If your family is applying to Menlo alongside Harker, Crystal Springs, or Nueva, you are preparing for two different tests on two different timelines, and the Menlo one lands in the fall rather than the winter.
There is a narrow exception. Families living outside the nine Bay Area counties who genuinely cannot attend an in-person session may submit SSAT or ISEE scores. International applicants must also submit TOEFL scores when their current school does not teach primarily in English. If your child attends an English-medium international school, ask the admissions office directly rather than assuming, because the wording turns on the language of instruction, not on citizenship.

Top Tips for Applying
- Separate your STAR preparation from your ISEE or SSAT preparation. They are different tests on different calendars, and merging them costs your child in both.
- Register the moment applications open on September 1. Sixth grade visit dates skip November entirely, which shortens the window more than families expect.
- Let your child answer the Kira prompts in their own register. Over-coached video responses are the most visible form of over-preparation in this process.
- If Menlo is genuinely your family’s first choice, attend an affinity or community admissions event and ask parents there what the first year was actually like.
- Apply at 6th or 9th grade if you can. Other grades are space-available, and this cycle Menlo is accepting transfers into 10th grade only.
Best Practices for Families
- Ask directly about affinity group participation rates rather than their existence. Every school has a list; fewer have attendance.
- Be candid with your child about why Menlo appeals to your family. Applicants who can articulate a real reason interview far better than applicants performing enthusiasm.
- Resist stacking activities in the fall of the application year. Menlo asks about depth, and a suddenly crowded resume reads exactly as it is.
- Plan the commute before you plan the essay. Four bus routes and a Caltrain shuttle make Menlo workable from much of the Peninsula.
- Keep current-year grades steady. Menlo reads the year in progress, not just last year’s report card.
