Everything your family needs to know about applying to Trinity’s Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools for 2027–2028
Quick Answer for Busy Parents
Trinity School is a K–12 coeducational independent day school on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, founded in 1709. Its two real entry points are Kindergarten and Grade 9, where about 60 new students join each year. Grade 9 applicants apply by November 15, 2026, complete a Campus Visit, submit ISEE or SSAT scores, three teacher or counselor recommendations, transcripts, and written essays, and finish their file by January 8, 2027. Grade 9 decisions arrive on February 19, 2027. Every other open grade depends on a current student leaving, and Trinity does not accept applications for Grades 8 or 12.
Why Do Families Choose Trinity School?
Trinity is the fifth-oldest school in the United States and the oldest continually operating school in New York City. It began in 1709 as a charity school teaching the children of Trinity Church’s parish near Wall Street, moved uptown several times as the city grew, and settled on West 91st Street in 1895. Girls, who attended the school in its early years, were readmitted in 1971, and Trinity has been fully coeducational since. Today, roughly 1,040 students move through the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School on one connected campus.
What families tend to notice first is the mission. Trinity organizes itself around four principles. Vocation holds that the conversation between the student and the teacher is the heart of the school. Obligation asks students what they believe so they can know themselves in the world. Promise commits the school to engaging its city, nation, and world. The meaning is captured in the motto, Labore et virtute: hard work and moral excellence. Those aren’t slogans buried in a viewbook. They show up directly in what Trinity asks applicants to write and discuss.

How Hard Is It to Get Into Trinity School?
Trinity does not publish an acceptance rate, so treat any number you see as an estimate. Independent estimates generally put admission at Kindergarten and Grade 9 in the low to mid teens, which places Trinity among the most selective independent schools in the country. If you want context on what those figures do and don’t mean, our explainer on private school acceptance rates is a helpful starting point. Non-entry grades are harder to plan around than to get into, since a seat has to open before Trinity even schedules a visit.
Trinity says plainly what it weighs: family conversations, teacher insights, transcripts, essays, and testing, all chosen to understand a child’s interests, strengths, and voice. In practice, three things carry unusual weight. The Campus Visit puts your child in a one-on-one conversation, a group activity, and a writing exercise in a single afternoon. The written materials are personal by design. And recommendations come from math, English, and a counselor or principal, so academic consistency matters.
Many families applying to Trinity also consider fellow Ivy Preparatory School League members such as The Dalton School, Horace Mann School, and Collegiate School. Each shares Trinity’s rigor, but their cultures differ, and visiting more than one usually sharpens a family’s sense of fit.
Top Tips for Applying
- Start the conversation about Grade 9 in seventh grade, so testing and teacher relationships aren’t rushed.
- Apply and book the Campus Visit before November 15, 2026. Later dates depend on availability.
- Sit for the ISEE or SSAT early in the August to December window, leaving time to retest.
- Read the four mission principles together as a family and talk about where you see them in your child.
- Build a balanced list. Trinity is a reach for nearly every applicant.
Best Practices for Families
- Let your child do the writing. Trinity asks for original, independent responses.
- Choose specific, honest stories for the parent statement, including one about a real mistake.
- Prepare your child to think out loud in a group, not just to answer questions one-on-one.
- Request recommendations promptly after forms open on November 1.
- Watch the FinalSite checklist closely. Only complete files are reviewed.
Trinity Admissions Questions Parents Ask Early
Can my child apply to Trinity in Grade 8 or Grade 12?
No. Trinity does not accept applications for Grades 8 or 12. Families who want a Middle School start should look at Grades 5 through 7, understanding that those seats depend on attrition.
Does attending an Open House help my child’s chances?
Not directly. Trinity says its Open Houses are optional and non-evaluative, and it doesn’t track attendance. Go to learn whether Trinity fits your child.
The Trinity School Admissions Process, Step by Step
Trinity’s Grade 9 process runs through its FinalSite portal from September to January. Here’s how the pieces fit together. A strong private school application treats these as one connected story rather than seven separate tasks.
- Submit the application. Create a portal account and apply by November 15, 2026. The portal becomes your checklist, upload center, and decision inbox.
- Book the Campus Visit. Schedule through the portal by November 15 to secure your preferred date.
- Write the parent statement and student essays. Three parent prompts of up to 500 words and three student prompts of 150 words or less.
- Take the ISEE or SSAT. Test between August and December. Multiple attempts are superscored.
- Send school records. Transcripts for 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, plus fall 2026 grades, through a records release form.
- Request recommendations. Math, English, and guidance counselor or principal forms open November 1.
- Add optional materials. A headshot and supplementary work such as an art or academic portfolio.

Kindergarten follows a different path: application by October 16, a parent tour and interview held alongside a small-group child visit, a classroom observation, and a school report. Non-entry grades complete the file first, and Trinity reaches out to schedule visits only if a seat opens.

Trinity School Application Requirements
Standardized Testing
Trinity requires testing for every grade from 2 through 11. Upper School applicants choose between two exams, and both are treated equally. Families can prepare with our ISEE tutoring or SSAT preparation programs.
| Applying For | Accepted Test | Notes |
| Grades 9, 10, 11 | ISEE (Upper Level) or SSAT | Take between August and December. ISEE code 334090; SSAT code 7769. Superscored. |
| Grades 5–7 | ISEE | Required for the file to be complete |
| Grades 2–4 | ISEE Primary | Scheduled directly with ERB |
| Kindergarten | None | Classroom observation instead |
Parent Statement and Student Essays
The parent or guardian statement reflects on your child’s character and inner life through three 500-word prompts: Home and Shared Joy, Intellectual Curiosity and Growth, and Covenant and Relationship. Grade 9 students write three responses of 150 words or less: the story of an interest, talent, skill, or object that brings them joy; why a favorite family tradition matters; and how their neighborhood has shaped them. Our companion article walks through every prompt in detail.
Recommendation Letters
| Applying For | Required Recommendations |
| Grades 9, 10, 11 | Math teacher, English teacher, and guidance counselor or principal |
| Grades 5–7 | One teacher recommendation |
| Grade 4 | Two teacher recommendations |
| Grades 2–3 | One teacher recommendation |
| Kindergarten | School report from current program |
Transcripts and School Records
Middle and Upper School applicants submit final transcripts for 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 and fall 2026 semester grades. Lower School applicants submit a school report, and Grades 2 through 4 also send a writing sample, ideally a school assignment with teacher comments.

Inside the Trinity Campus Visit
What happens during the Grade 9 Campus Visit?
The visit runs about two hours and forty-five minutes. Your child has a one-on-one conversation with an admissions officer, joins a collaborative group activity, completes a short writing exercise, and tours with current students. Because the writing is done on site, practice with proctored writing samples is worth the time.
What do parents do during the visit?
Parents tour the campus, meet current Trinity parents informally, and have their own one-on-one conversation with an admissions officer. Come ready to talk about your child the way you would to a trusted teacher. Our interview preparation work helps both students and parents feel settled going in.
Student Life at Trinity School
Academics
The Middle School curriculum covers English, Mathematics, Science, History and Social Studies, Latin, a modern language (Spanish continued from the Lower School, or French beginning in Grade 5), Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Physical Education, with a Learning Specialist coordinating support across departments. Latin is a hallmark of a Trinity education. In the Upper School, a Minimester program organizes study around five themes: Explore, Magnify, Make, Move, and Unplug. A dedicated college counseling office supports students through the college process.
Activities and Service
Trinity’s public service program runs from Kindergarten through Grade 12, rooted in its founding as a charity school, and the school maintains 14 community partnerships. Spiritual life continues through weekly Chapel and ongoing conversations about religion and ethics, though the school has been non-sectarian since the late 1960s. Students also produce The Trinity Times, the student newspaper, and The Bruner, the yearbook, and take part in 30 diversity affinity groups and 8 global engagement trips a year.
Athletics
The Trinity Tigers compete in the Ivy Preparatory School League and field 22 sports. Campus facilities include two swimming pools and the John McEnroe ’77 Tennis Courts.
| Season | Teams |
| Fall | Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, Girls’ Tennis, Girls’ Volleyball, Mixed Water Polo |
| Winter | Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track and Field, Boys’ and Girls’ Squash, Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming, Wrestling |
| Spring | Baseball, Boys’ and Girls’ Golf, Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse, Softball, Boys’ Tennis, Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field, Boys’ Volleyball |
Arts
Performing and visual arts run through all three divisions, with about 40 performances a year. Musical groups range from jazz ensembles, orchestras, and chamber groups to accompanied and a cappella choruses, and a 2017 addition to the campus brought a new performing arts center.
Summer Programs
Trinity runs a summer camp on campus and the Trinity Swim Club, which keeps its pools in use year-round.
