Mock Interview
We start with an unscored mock interview under realistic conditions to see exactly how your child communicates and handles an unfamiliar question before any coaching begins.
As Seen On
By the time most private schools reach the interview stage, the paperwork has already done its job. Grades, test scores, the personal statement, and the parent statement have all been read. The interview is different. It is the one moment in the entire process where a real conversation, not a document, decides whether a student is to be considered.
A child who wrote a thoughtful personal statement can still go blank across the table from an admissions officer, especially if the only preparation has been memorizing answers to a list of common questions. Rehearsed answers tend to sound rehearsed, and admissions officers who sit through dozens of interviews a season notice immediately.
Our approach is built on the same belief that runs through every part of our admissions consulting. A student’s character, not a script, is what makes an interview memorable. We help each child get comfortable talking honestly about who they are, so the person the admissions committee meets in the room is the same person they met on the page. The goal is never a flawless performance. It is a conversation your child can actually enjoy, because they are not guessing at the right answer.
OUR PROCESS
Interview preparation at Cardinal Education starts with a real mock interview, not a list of questions. We want to see how your child naturally responds under a bit of pressure before we coach anything, so the work that follows is targeted instead of generic. From there, we help your child build honest, specific answers rooted in real experience rather than memorized talking points, and we connect that work to the same personal statement and parent statement your family may already be developing with us, so every part of the application tells one consistent, honest story. For schools that also interview parents, we prepare the whole family, not just the applicant, because an admissions officer notices quickly when a parent and child seem to be describing two different homes.

02
Every school interviews differently. Some are one-on-one conversations, others are panel or group formats. We research each target school’s approach and prepare your child for the specific format and tone they will actually encounter.
03
We help your child identify the real experiences and values worth talking about, the same honest material we use in personal statement work, so their answers sound like them rather than a rehearsed pitch.
04
Your child completes several rounds of mock interviews with increasingly realistic conditions and direct feedback after each one, building genuine composure rather than a memorized script.
05
Before the real interview, we align your child’s talking points with their personal statement and parent statement, and, where a school requires it, prepare parents for their own interview so the whole family presents one honest, consistent picture.
PLACED AT A NEW YORK SCHOOL
“We weren’t sure how to help our child prepare for interviews. Cardinal Education was a lifesaver. They did several mock sessions until she was confident enough. It was such a relief to see her go into those interviews feeling prepared, confident, and, most importantly, like herself.”Parent of 6th Grade Applicant, New York
PLACED AT HARVARD-WESTLAKE
“When we started practicing for interviews, our child sounded like a robot. Cardinal Education helped him articulate his own story and passions. Because of their support, he walked into his interviews feeling comfortable, and he was able to connect with the admissions officers. We later on received an acceptance letter from Harvard-Westlake.”Parent of 7th Grade Harvard-Westlake admit, Los Angeles
For two decades, Cardinal Education has worked alongside families in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Seattle, along with international families served entirely online, to prepare students for the schools where they will genuinely thrive. Our team includes former admissions officers who have sat on the other side of the interview table and know exactly what they were listening for beyond a rehearsed answer.
We do not believe a strong interview can be scripted. It can only be prepared for, one honest conversation at a time. That is the work we do beside every family we take on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Four to six weeks before your first scheduled interview is a good starting point, though it works best after your child has already begun personal statement work, so the stories they tell in the interview stay consistent with the stories on the page.
In most cases, yes. When every candidate looks similar on paper, the interview is one of the few remaining chances for a student to be remembered as a person rather than a file. We can help you weigh this decision for your child’s specific schools.
At many schools, yes. We prepare the whole family, not just the applicant, so parents and students are telling a consistent, honest story rather than improvising separately in the room.
A list of questions produces memorized answers, and experienced admissions officers can usually tell. We focus on genuine reflection and real experience, so your child’s answers sound like them under any question, not just the ones they rehearsed.
Mock interviews and coaching sessions work just as well over video as they do in person, and many of the families we prepare each cycle are entirely remote or international.
A short consultation to understand your child’s schools and timeline, followed by scheduling the first baseline mock interview. We take on a limited number of students each cycle, so earlier outreach gives your family more flexibility.
