Teacher Selection Guidance
We help you identify who has genuinely seen your child’s character in action, in the classroom or beyond it, and who can speak in specifics rather than impressions.
As Seen On
Of everything in a private school application, the recommendation letter is the one piece you can’t touch directly. You can shape a personal statement. You can prep a student for an interview. A teacher’s letter, though, is out of your hands, and that’s exactly why it worries so many parents applying to highly selective independent and boarding schools.
Here’s the real issue. Most teachers write a dozen or more of these letters every year, and by the fifth or sixth, they start to blur together. A capable, well-liked student who “works hard” and “participates in class” doesn’t tell an admissions committee anything they haven’t already read a hundred times.
As part of our globally recognized private school admissions consulting, we make sure that doesn’t happen to your child. Whether you’re applying locally or internationally, we help families get recommendations that are specific and true. The kind of letter that reflects character instead of politeness, leadership instead of participation.
Admissions officers at selective schools read hundreds of letters a season. Most say some version of the same thing: hardworking, kind, a pleasure to have in class. None of that is false, and none of it moves the needle either. A letter that mentions the specific afternoon a student pushed through a difficult problem set, or the way they treated a struggling classmate, does something a transcript can’t. It shows character in action, not just character claimed.
That’s the gap we close. We make sure the teacher writes something honest and specific.
OUR APPROACH
01
We help you identify who has genuinely seen your child’s character in action, in the classroom or beyond it, and who can speak in specifics rather than impressions.
02
We help you make that connection with your child’s recommenders, to help them draw out the kind of detail that turns a nice letter into a memorable one.
03
We track every deadline and build in gentle, well-timed reminders, so a request never gets lost and nothing slips through the cracks before a deadline.
“I had no idea how much thought goes into a recommendation letter until we worked with Cardinal Education. Our daughter’s teacher wrote something so specific that the admissions director actually brought it up in the interview.”— Parent of a Grade 6 Applicant
“We didn’t know how to go about the recommendation letter process, but the guidance we received was invaluable. It turned a stressful guessing game into a clear, organized project, and the final letters were incredibly impactful.”— Parent of a High School Applicant
For two decades, Cardinal Education has worked alongside families in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Seattle, along with international families served entirely online, to prepare students for the schools where they will genuinely thrive. Our team includes former admissions officers who have read thousands of recommendation letters and know exactly what separates a memorable, specific letter from one that fails to distinguish an applicant.
We do not believe a recommendation letter can be manufactured. It can only be cultivated, one honest connection at a time. That is the work we do beside every family we take on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Two to three months before your deadline, at minimum. Teachers need real lead time to write something thoughtful, and starting early gives us time to help you choose the right recommenders in the first place.
We don’t write letters, and we don’t hand teachers a script to follow. Our focus is character: helping recommenders see and articulate who your child really is, so the letter that lands on an admissions officer’s desk reads like a specific person, not a template.
We help you select the strongest recommenders, build a context brief for each one, manage the timeline so nothing is rushed, and review the finished letters alongside the rest of your application before submission.
It depends on the school and grade level, but generally the teachers who’ve seen your child take initiative or grow over time, not necessarily the ones who gave the highest grades. We help you make that call based on each school’s specific requirements.
Yes. We work with families on six continents, and all of our recommendation letter advising happens online, including guidance on how different schooling systems typically approach teacher recommendations.
GET STARTED
We partner alongside a limited number of families each admission cycle to make sure every part of the application, including the parts you can’t write yourself, reflects who your child really is. Spaces are limited each enrollment cycle.
