Lawrenceville Through an Asian American Family’s Lens

A recent figure put Lawrenceville’s overall students-of-color population at approximately 62%, alongside roughly 16% international students drawn from around the world. Lawrenceville does not publish a more granular, current breakdown specific to Asian American students.

Historically, Lawrenceville admitted its first African-American students, Lyals Battle ’67 and Darell A. Fitzgerald ’68, in 1964, and in 2004, Elizabeth “Liz” Duffy ’88 became the school’s first female headmaster. Founded in 1810, Lawrenceville is a coeducational, nonsectarian boarding and day school serving Grades 9–12 and a postgraduate year.

What International and Domestic Families Should Know

Lawrenceville’s process runs largely the same for domestic and international Asian American applicants, aside from the added TOEFL or IELTS requirement for non-native English speakers. What the Lawrenceville Application Requires

  1. 01Personal Statement

Submitted through Gateway to Prep Schools, the personal statement gives applicants a platform to share their authentic voice, values, and intellectual passions. Lawrenceville expects reflective anecdotes that illustrate character, self-awareness, and readiness for Harkness learning rather than a list of accomplishments.

  2. 02Parent/Guardian Statement

Completed via Gateway to Prep Schools, the parent/guardian statement provides insight into the applicant from their family’s perspective. Parents are asked to share candid observations about their child’s character, learning style, household values, and reasons for choosing Lawrenceville.

  3. 03Recommendation Letters

Lawrenceville requires three official recommendations delegated through Gateway to current educators: a school report from the principal, head of school, or counselor; an English/humanities recommendation from an English, history, or social studies teacher; and a math/STEM recommendation from a math, science, or engineering teacher.

  4. 04Transcript

Applicants must submit official current-year grades from the first marking period (quarter, trimester, or semester) along with full grade reports from the previous two complete school years. Additionally, international transcripts require an official English translation.

  5. 05Admissions Interview

All applicants must complete an admissions interview, conducted either in person during a campus visit or virtually over Zoom. The session includes separate conversations with the student and parents/guardians. Candidates in select international regions typically complete an initial Vericant video interview first.

  6. 06Standardized Testing

Testing requirements are strictly based on target grade level. 9th Grade: SSAT or ISEE scores. 10th Grade and 11th Grade: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores. 12th Grade and Postgraduate: PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores. Non-native English speakers without two years of English-medium instruction must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores taken on or after June of the application year.
