An Introduction to The Bay School of San Francisco
Founded in 2004, The Bay School of San Francisco (“Bay”) is a coeducational, nonsectarian, college-preparatory high school located in a converted historic Army barracks in the Presidio, steps from the Golden Gate Bridge. Bay serves approximately 400–440 students in Grades 9–12 and does not require or consider standardized testing in its admissions process. The school is the only high school in California to build required, credit-bearing experiential learning terms directly into its academic calendar, known as Immersives, and is affiliated with the Mastery Transcript Consortium, a national effort to move beyond traditional GPA and letter grades.

What Is Unique About Applying to The Bay School of San Francisco?
Bay is explicit that it does not require or consider standardized testing as part of its admissions review, a distinctive position among selective San Francisco independent schools. Instead, the application centers on transcripts, recommendations, and parent and student statements, evaluated against Bay’s stated interest in intellectually curious, community-minded students. 01Student Statement
Submitted online via Ravenna, the student statement requires 9th-grade applicants (and 10th-grade transfers) to complete written prompts highlighting their personal interests, extracurricular pursuits, and alignment with The Bay School’s mission and project-based learning approach.

02Parent Statement
The Parent/Guardian Statement gives families an opportunity to share insights into their child’s character, personal development, learning style, and unique strengths. This section allows parents of 9th-grade and transfer applicants to share stories about their child’s educational journey and demonstrate how family values align with The Bay School’s collaborative, community-centered environment.

03Recommendations
The Bay School requires three confidential recommendations submitted via Ravenna from the applicant’s current math teacher, English teacher, and principal or counselor. (For 10th-grade transfers, these must come from their current high school instructors and counselor.)

04Transcript
Applicants must submit official academic records directly through their current school or Ravenna. 9th-grade applicants must submit transcripts from the previous two school years (full 7th grade and first term of 8th grade), while transfer applicants provide 8th- and 9th-grade records.

05Student Interview
All 9th-grade and transfer applicants complete a required 25-minute, 1-on-1 casual conversation with a member of the admissions team or faculty, held either on campus or virtually, to share their interests and ask questions.
