Founded in 1907 by Frank S. Hackett, Riverdale Country School is a coeducational, independent, college-preparatory day school spanning two campuses in the Riverdale section of the Bronx: the River Campus for PreK–5 and the Hill Campus for Grades 6–12. Together, the campuses cover 27.5 acres, the largest independent school footprint in New York City, serving roughly 1,300 students.

What to Expect from Riverdale Country School’s Admissions Process
Riverdale’s two-campus structure means its admissions process is built around specific entry points rather than open enrollment at every grade: PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 7, and Grade 9 are the primary points of entry, with other grades considered only based on attrition and limited financial aid. Testing requirements also vary by age: Kindergarten applicants take the FLI assessment, Grades 5–12 applicants submit ISEE or SSAT scores, and there is no required testing for PreK or Grades 1–4. Every applicant, regardless of grade, completes an interview, which Riverdale treats as central to understanding “character strengths, the potential for community engagement, and academic preparation.”

What Are the Application Requirements for Riverdale Country School?

01Student Essay
Submitted via Ravenna, student essays are required for Middle (Grades 6–8) and Upper School (Grades 9–12) applicants to share their perspectives and interests. Lower School (PreK–Grade 5) applicants do not submit an essay.

02Admissions Interview
A combined student and family interview is required for all applicants. Middle and Upper School meetings last roughly one hour (a 30–45 minute student discussion followed by parent conversation). Lower School (PreK–Grade 5) interviews occur alongside group observation visits and classroom play sessions.

03Recommendation Letters
Delegated via Ravenna, recommendations vary by grade: PreK–Grade 1 require the ISAAGNY Confidential School Report; Grades 2–5 require a teacher evaluation form; and Grades 6–12 require three official recommendations (current English teacher, Math teacher, and principal or counselor).

04Transcript
Transcripts are delegated via Ravenna for Grades 2–12 (not required for PreK–Grade 1). Applicants must submit official report cards and transcripts covering the current year plus the prior two full academic years, including attendance and conduct records.

05Character Skill Snapshot
Upper School applicants (Grades 9–12) must complete the online Character Skills Snapshot to assess personal attributes like resilience, open-mindedness, and teamwork. It is not required for PreK–Grade 8 applicants.

06Standardized Testing
Testing varies by grade: none for PreK–Grade 4 (except Kindergarten’s First Look Insight play-based assessment). Grades 5–12 applicants must submit official test results from either the ISEE or the SSAT.
