About the School

A Different Question at Newark Academy

Most Asian American families touring independent schools arrive with a version of the same worry: will my child be the only one, and will being one of few quietly shape how their application is read. Newark Academy is an unusual place to ask that question. A third of the student body is Asian, no racial group holds a majority, and the school has run a staffed Office of Equity, Inclusion and Belonging with nearly twenty affiliated student organizations for years. The worry shifts. It stops being about visibility and becomes something harder and more interesting: in a room full of accomplished Asian American applicants, what actually distinguishes one from another.

Where Asian American Students Find Community

Newark Academy runs more than 60 Upper School clubs and 18 in the Middle School. Nineteen of those are affiliated with the Office of Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, which is staffed by divisional coordinators and includes a student team selected by application. Three are directly relevant here.

  • Asian Diversity. An Upper School club built around East and Southeast Asian cultural life.
  • South Asian Student Union. A distinct affinity space rather than a subgroup folded into the above.
  • Middle Eastern and Muslim Cultural Club. Spans cultural and religious identity.

Students also travel. Newark Academy sends students to the Young Asian Leadership Alliance Gala and Conference, the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference, and the DAIS Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. Inside the building, every ninth grader takes a required course called Creating Community, and students can serve as EIT liaisons between the equity office and its affiliated organizations. The school also operates a Bias Response and Education System open to every member of the community.

Applying to Newark Academy: What the School Asks For

Applications are accepted for grades 6 through 11, and grades 6 and 9 are where the school actually builds a class. Grades 7 and 8 grow modestly by design. Grades 10 and 11 depend entirely on whether someone leaves.

Top Tips for Applying

  • Resist the instinct to present a maximally credentialed child. In a pool this strong, a long list of activities reads as noise rather than signal.
  • Pick the one or two commitments your child would keep doing if nobody were grading it, and let the application go deep on those.
  • Have your child articulate why an IB curriculum appeals to them specifically, since that is the academic bet Newark Academy is making.
  • Register for the SSAT or ISEE in early fall. Both require advance registration and the school grants no fee waivers.
  • If your family is relocating, start earlier than feels necessary, because the December 1 form closes before many families have finished house-hunting.

Best Practices for Families

  • Prepare your child to be interesting rather than impressive. The conversation is deliberately informal and admission officers notice the difference immediately.
  • Use the optional parent portion to explain context an application cannot show, such as a move, a language transition, or a year that looks worse on paper than it was.
  • Avoid framing your child’s heritage as either a hurdle to overcome or a box to check. Specific, lived detail lands; abstraction does not.
  • Choose recommenders who can describe how your child thinks, not just what they scored.
  • Read the school’s own admission pages each cycle, since requirements and dates do move.

Application Requirements

  1. 01The Online Admission Form

This is the application itself, opening September 1 with short-answer questions for the student and a separate set for parents or guardians. Students who write the essay they think Newark Academy wants tend to produce something indistinguishable from a hundred others. Our personal statement work is about locating the specific thing only your child would say. On the parent questions, the aim is to add context without slipping into advocacy.

  2. 02Candidate and Family Conversations

Candidates self-schedule through the portal once the form has been processed. Students outside northern New Jersey, including international applicants, may complete the conversation over Zoom. Parents join for the final 10 to 15 minutes, an optional but encouraged segment. For students who are more comfortable listening than talking, this format is a genuine hurdle, which is why we treat conversation preparation as a skill to build rather than a script to memorize.

  3. 03Testing, Transcripts, and Recommendations

Either the SSAT or the ISEE is required for grades 6 through 11, with no institutional preference and no need to sit both. Newark Academy reports an average admitted score around the 70th percentile. Prior year transcripts come directly from the current school by December 15, current year grades and teacher recommendations by January 11. Families deciding between the two exams can start with our SSAT and ISEE comparison, then move into targeted test preparation. Newark Academy requires no TOEFL and provides no ESL support, expecting fluent English from every enrolled student.

How Cardinal Education Helps

The hardest advice we give Asian American families is usually the least welcome: the résumé is already strong enough, and the thing holding the application back is that nobody can tell who your child is from reading it. Fixing that is slower work than adding another activity. It means helping a student find a real opinion and defend it, which happens to be the exact muscle Newark Academy’s IB curriculum will spend two years developing. Our admissions consultants start there. Families comparing Newark Academy against other northern New Jersey options may also want our general Newark Academy admissions page or our guide to The Pingry School, its closest peer in the region.
