About Newark Academy
Newark Academy is a private, co-educational, college-preparatory day school serving grades 6 through 12 on a 68-acre campus in Livingston, New Jersey. Founded in 1774, it is older than the country itself and one of the oldest independent day schools in the United States. The school enrolls 690 students, 489 in the Upper School and 201 in the Middle School, and teaches to a motto that has held for 250 years: Ad Lumen, toward the light. Newark Academy College Counseling Team
Five counselors serve the 489-student Upper School, and formal counseling begins in 10th grade rather than senior fall: Kerri Speck, Senior Associate Director; Jessica Cohen, Associate Director; Brandon McCallister, Assistant Director; and counselors Sarah Jin and Kyle Mariboe.

Newark Academy Admissions Timeline and Events
Newark Academy stages its deadlines rather than converging on one. Families who watch only December 1 tend to scramble in January.
Online Admission Form Opens
September 1, 2026 (The OAF is the first step and unlocks the rest of the candidate checklist)
Online Admission Form Due
December 1 (Late submissions require contacting the admission office directly)
Prior-Year Transcripts Due
December 15 (Sent by the current school, not the family)
Supplemental Materials Due
January 11 (Current-year grades, teacher recommendations, conversations, and test scores)
Admission Decisions Released
February 19, 2027 (For 2027-28 entry)
Enrollment Deadline
March 5, 2027 (Contracts due back to the school)
Visit programming runs alongside the calendar: fall open houses led by student ambassadors, day visits for grade 6 and grade 9 candidates that unlock only after the OAF is submitted, division-specific tours, and an Admission 101 webinar from the admission team. Dates shift each cycle, so confirm them directly.
What Makes Newark Academy’s Admissions Process Unique?
Two features set this process apart. Newark Academy is explicit that it grows moderately in 7th and 8th grade and that 10th or 11th grade placement depends entirely on a spot opening, which makes entry-point selection a real strategic decision. And the school replaces the conventional interview with a 30-minute candidate conversation plus a separate 15-minute parent conversation. Parents are evaluated in their own right here. That structure rewards families who have thought carefully about why this school, and exposes the ones who have not.
What the Newark Academy Application Requires
Newark Academy reviews candidates holistically. Nothing on this list is a formality.
Top Tips for Applying to Newark Academy
- Apply to a primary entry point, 6th or 9th grade, unless you have a specific reason not to.
- Register for the SSAT or ISEE early, since both require advance registration and January fills quickly.
- Submit the Online Admission Form well before December 1, because it unlocks day visits and conversation scheduling.
- Prepare the parent conversation as seriously as the student one.
- Choose supplementary materials that show genuine depth in one area rather than breadth across five.
Best Practices for Families
- Visit campus before you apply, and go to a division-specific tour rather than only a general open house.
- Ask your child’s English and math teachers for recommendations early in the fall, before their own workload peaks.
- Track the candidate checklist in the portal and allow 24 to 48 hours for each document to register.
- Read the school’s Six C’s framework and its Community Commitments before any conversation with admissions.
- Build a real activity record over years, not a list assembled the summer before applying.
Application Requirements
-
01Online Admission Form
The form opens in early September and carries short-answer questions for both the applicant and the parents. Until it is submitted and processed, your family cannot self-schedule a conversation or request a day visit. Submitting in September rather than late November is the easiest advantage available in this process.
-
02Candidate and Parent Conversations
A 30-minute conversation with the candidate and a separate 15-minute conversation with parents, both self-scheduled through the checklist. The student meets admissions alone, deliberately, because the school wants your child’s own thinking unfiltered. The parent conversation is where families most often stumble, usually by reaching for superlatives instead of specifics. Our interview preparation helps families narrate their authentic stories that resonate with admissions officers.
-
03Teacher Recommendations
Current English teacher, current math teacher, and one teacher of the student’s choosing. The strongest letters come from teachers who have watched your child struggle with something and keep going. A specific moment of intellectual persistence does more than a confirmation of A’s.
-
04Grade Reports and Transcripts
Prior-year transcripts are due December 15; current-year grades follow January 11. Newark Academy reads course level and consistency together. A student who moved into harder classes and rose to meet them reads more convincingly than one with flat excellence in undemanding coursework. Tutoring can help boost grades for a more impressive transcript during application time.
-
05Standardized Testing
Either the SSAT or the ISEE, for grades 6 through 11, with no stated school preference. The SSAT rewards verbal reasoning and vocabulary range; the ISEE is more structurally predictable. Newark Academy offers the ISEE on campus in winter. Scores are due January 11.
-
06Supplementary Materials
Optional, linked through the Online Admission Form, and worth submitting when the work is strong: arts portfolios, athletic footage, research, or a built project. A coach or mentor may email a supplementary recommendation to the admission office. Submit only what shows something the rest of the application cannot.
How Cardinal Education Helps
Our work with Newark Academy families usually starts a year or more before the December 1 deadline, because what makes an application persuasive here cannot be manufactured in the fall. We help your child develop a real intellectual identity and learn to articulate it, prepare both conversations, build toward the SSAT or ISEE from a diagnostic rather than a guess, and make an honest call on entry point. Families looking for guidance specific to Asian American applicants can read our dedicated Newark Academy resource for Asian American families.
“Cardinal Education helped our daughter craft an application that genuinely sounded like her, and she was admitted to Newark Academy. The essay coaching made all the difference.”— Parent of a Newark Academy Upper School Admit
