What Makes Keys’ Admissions Process Unique?
Keys School is test-blind: it does not require or consider ISEE, SSAT, or any standardized test score at any grade level, a distinct approach compared to schools that are test-optional. In place of testing, Keys builds its evaluation around the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire and Conference, teacher and head/advisor recommendations, transcripts, and, for Grades 6–8 applicants, a Student Questionnaire. New students are primarily admitted at Kindergarten and 6th grade, though other grades are considered based on available space.
Top Tips for Applying
- Since Keys doesn’t test, invest your preparation time in the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire, recommendations, and interview instead.
- Request teacher and head/advisor recommendations early; both are required for Grades 1–8.
- Note that visit requirements differ by grade: a Campus Playdate for K–1, a School Visit Day for Grades 2–8, or an After School Activity for Grade 6.
Best Practices for Families
- Attend an Open House or Guided Virtual Tour for your child’s specific campus before applying.
- Prepare for the required Parent/Guardian Conference as a genuine conversation about fit, not a formality.
- For Grades 6–8 applicants, take the Student Questionnaire seriously; it’s a required, substantive part of the file.
What the Keys Application Requires
Applying to Keys School involves a few specific steps to complete your file. Use this guide to understand exactly what you need to provide and participate in for a successful application.
-
01Testing Policy
Keys School does not use standardized tests for any part of its admissions process. You do not need to worry about submitting ISEE, SSAT, or other test results for your child. This policy holds true for all grades, so no testing is ever required.
-
02Recommendations & Transcripts
You must submit a recommendation form from your child’s current teacher for all applications. For students entering grades 1–8, a head or advisor recommendation is also required. Please be sure to provide current and previous transcripts if you are applying for grades 1–8.
-
03Parent/Guardian Conference
Parents and guardians are required to complete a formal meeting with the admissions staff. This interview is a key step to help the school understand your family’s needs. You will be able to schedule this conversation once your application has been submitted.
-
04Student Visit
Each applicant is required to visit the campus as part of their evaluation process. The format varies by grade, with options like a playdate for K–1 or a visit day for grades 2–8. Students applying for grade 6 may participate in a specific after-school activity session instead.
Apply to Keys School with the Best Admissions Consultants in Palo Alto
Because Keys doesn’t test, the highest-leverage places for a family to focus are the pieces that actually carry weight: the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire, the required interview, and (for Grades 6–8) the Student Questionnaire. Cardinal Education’s private school admissions consulting helps families prepare deliberately for each of these, rather than defaulting to generic test prep that Keys’ process doesn’t call for.
Families researching Keys often also look at how it stacks up among the best private elementary schools and top middle schools nationally, and want to understand Keys’ track record of high school placements.
“Keys School was our top choice, but going through the process was tedious and difficult. Thanks to Cardinal’s expertise, we felt confident every step of the way. Their insights on the application and overall school fit were spot on. Our child is now enrolled at Keys, and we couldn’t be more blessed!”— Parent of a 6th Grader
