Most new Head-Royce students enter in Kindergarten, Grade 6, or Grade 9, and each entry point has a different testing requirement: Kindergarten and Grade 1 applicants complete an Assessment Day, while everyone in Grades 2 through 12 submits ISEE scores instead. Current sibling and employee families applying for Kindergarten or Grade 6 follow an earlier, separate timeline with early decision consideration.
Why Entry Point Matters at a K-12 School
Unlike a school that only enrolls at one grade, Head-Royce’s K-12 structure means the admissions office manages several distinct pipelines at once, each with its own calendar, testing requirement, and applicant pool size. A family researching Head-Royce for a Grade 9 applicant will find a meaningfully different process than a family applying for Kindergarten, so it’s worth understanding your specific track rather than researching the admissions process generically.
Kindergarten Applicants
Kindergarten applicants complete an Assessment Day rather than a standardized test. General Kindergarten applications follow the standard K-12 timeline: preliminary application and fee due December 4, 2026, with completed applications due January 8, 2027, and decisions posted March 11, 2027.
Grade 6 Applicants
Grade 6 is Head-Royce’s Middle School entry point. General applicants follow the same K-12 timeline as Kindergarten. Grade 6 is also one of only two grades, alongside Kindergarten, where current sibling and employee families receive early decision consideration on a separate track.
Grade 9 Applicants
Grade 9 is Head-Royce’s Upper School entry point. Applicants submit ISEE scores as part of the standard K-12 application timeline; there is no separate early-consideration track for Grade 9 the way there is for Kindergarten and Grade 6.
Sibling and Employee Family Early Consideration
Families with a child already enrolled at Head-Royce, or Head-Royce faculty/staff families, applying for Kindergarten or Grade 6 receive early decision consideration on a separate timeline from the general applicant pool.

This early-consideration path does not extend to Grade 9 or to general (non-sibling/employee) Kindergarten and Grade 6 applicants, who follow the standard December-March timeline.
