What Kairos Actually Involves
Kairos, a Greek word referring to a moment of opportunity or decision, is centered on the affirmation of each person’s worth and the idea that God’s love is unconditional and ever-present. Over four days at the Presentation Center in Los Gatos, students explore their relationships with themselves, their families and friendships, and their understanding of God through student-led days of reflection. Participants return to campus wearing Kairos medals and “Live the Fourth” shirts, physical symbols of an experience students and staff alike describe as one of the most meaningful of their time at SHC.

From Junior Nomination to Senior Leadership
Kairos isn’t open to every student automatically. Juniors are nominated by their theology teachers to attend the March retreat, a selection process that reflects a level of theology-department discretion many families may not expect from a program often described as a rite of passage. Students who attend as juniors are then invited to return the following year as leaders, guiding the next class of participants through the same four-day experience, creating a continuous, peer-driven chain of leadership from one class to the next.

Campus Ministry Beyond Kairos
Kairos is the most visible piece of Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Campus Ministry program, but not the only one. Sophomores take part in “Anchored,” a day focused specifically on faith and service. SHC also organizes immersion trips to places like Yakima, Washington, and Mexico, deepening students’ commitment to social justice through direct experience rather than classroom instruction alone. Each spring, the Lasallian District of San Francisco-New Orleans sponsors “Called and Chosen” vocation retreats, bringing together students from schools throughout the district to reflect on their future paths.

SHC frames Campus Ministry as integral to the educational mission of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—rather than an optional add-on to academics, which is part of why the program spans multiple grade levels rather than concentrating entirely on seniors.
