From Research Science to a Full Advanced Research Program
Rowland Hall’s AR program didn’t appear overnight. It grew out of Research Science, a course established in 2020 that gave students an early structured path into independent scientific inquiry. Building on that foundation, Rowland Hall launched the full AR program in 2023-2024, expanding beyond a single science course into a family of discipline-specific classes. The most recent addition, AR Physics, launched for the 2025-2026 school year, becoming the sixth class in the lineup and giving seniors interested in physics the same kind of self-directed research opportunity previously available mainly in biology and chemistry.

What Students Actually Study
Each AR class pairs students with faculty mentors with real subject-matter expertise. AR Biology, for instance, is guided by Dr. Padmashree Rida and immerses students in the research and communication processes of biological and biomedical science. In the 2025-2026 school year, an eight-student AR Biology class tackled four separate research projects. Beyond biology, AR Chemistry, AR Computational and Mathematical Sciences, AR Humanities, and AR Physics give students entry points across the sciences and humanities, letting a student interested in identity and intersectionality in American drama pursue a project as rigorous, in its own discipline, as a student studying cancer biomarkers.

Real Publication and Competition Results
Advanced Research isn’t just a classroom exercise; student work has reached real academic and competitive venues. In early 2026, research conducted by two AR Biology groups during the 2024-2025 school year was published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Molecular Sciences. That same AR Biology cohort presented findings publicly at the American Association for Cancer Research’s Annual Meeting in San Diego. More broadly, Rowland Hall students earned 19 awards, including four international qualifiers, at the 2026 University of Utah Science & Engineering Fair.
