Why Nueva’s Hillsborough Campus Draws Asian American Families

Ask Asian American parents on the Peninsula why Nueva is on their list and you rarely hear the word prestige first. You hear about a child who finished the math curriculum two years early and stopped talking in class. Nueva’s Hillsborough campus, home to PreK through grade 8, was built in 1967 for precisely that child. The constructivist program refuses to separate intellectual and emotional development, and its 6:1 ratio means a quiet child cannot disappear. For families who have watched a gifted child be labeled a behavior problem or, just as often, be praised into silence, that combination is the entire draw.

Community and Affinity Life at Nueva

Nueva runs student affinity groups in all three divisions, student-led and faculty-advised, alongside family affinity groups organized through the Nueva Parents’ Association. Four are directly relevant to Asian American families, and all four are real and current rather than aspirational.

  • Koreans At Nueva
  • Chinese Affinity Group
  • Japanese Affinity Group
  • South Asian Affinity Group

Across every division, Nueva holds assemblies for Asian American History Month, and works with the student affinity groups to run cultural celebrations for the whole community rather than confining them to the families they concern. The school added a Director of Equity and Inclusion in May 2024. What Nueva does not publish is a division-level ethnic breakdown, so any specific figure you encounter for Asian American enrollment at the Hillsborough campus is an outside estimate rather than a school statistic.

What Asian American Families Should Understand About This Process

Nueva’s admissions process is unusually resistant to the preparation strategies that work elsewhere, and that cuts both ways for Asian American applicants. The Wechsler assessment cannot be crammed, and a child may sit for it only once every twelve months, so a mistimed appointment costs a full cycle. The Activity Session rewards children who wonder aloud and change their minds in front of adults, which is not what many children are taught to do. And the parent questionnaire asks you to describe your child candidly, in a register that can feel uncomfortably immodest to families raised not to advertise their children. None of this is a disadvantage. It is simply a different set of demands than the ones most families have been preparing for.

The Nueva Application, Component by Component

  1. 01Wechsler IQ Assessment

The gate for every lower and middle school applicant. Younger children take the WPPSI-IV, older children the WISC-V, always with a licensed psychologist outside the school. Results must land in Nueva’s unpublished target range before anything else in the file is considered. In-range results carry across two consecutive admissions cycles, which means a strong result taken at the right moment can serve two application years.

  2. 02Family Information Form and Fee

Submitted in Ravenna with a $100 nonrefundable fee. Families applying for financial assistance can request a waiver inside the platform.

  3. 03Parent and Guardian Written Questionnaire

This is where we see the most self-inflicted damage. Parents write a resume when Nueva wants a portrait. Describe the argument your child picked with you about fairness, the thing they build compulsively, the subject they will not let go. Two developed observations outperform a list of ten achievements every time. See our guide to writing a private school parent essay.

  4. 04Parent and Guardian Video Questionnaire

Recorded on Kira, unlocked in Ravenna once your Family Information Form and in-range results are in. You get preparation time before each prompt and may complete it across several sittings. Parents who speak English as a second language should know the questionnaire evaluates substance, not fluency, and that pausing to think reads well.

  5. 05Transcripts and Evaluations

Requested through Ravenna from your child’s current school: prior-year reports, current grades once available in late January, and cumulative file contents. Lower school applicants use the common ISSFBA evaluation form. Middle school applicants need a principal or counselor form plus one current and one previous core-subject teacher.

  6. 06Activity Session

Middle school sessions run November through January, most in December. For grades 1 through 4, sessions are limited and waived for most applicants; the committee reviews the file first and reaches out only if a session would help. No grade 1 through 4 sessions are offered after the early-January cutoff.

  7. 07Middle School Additions: Writing Sample, Student Questionnaire, Creative Project

Applicants to grades 5 through 8 also complete a 30-minute Kira Talent writing sample, a character-limited student questionnaire, and a Creative Project started after September 1. Kira monitors for outside help, including AI tools, and a detected violation ends the application permanently across all future cycles. Lower school applicants complete none of these.

Top Tips for Applying

  • Schedule the Wechsler assessment first, before anything else on your list. Availability, not readiness, is usually the binding constraint.
  • Understand that the twelve-month retest rule makes timing a strategic decision, not an administrative one.
  • Write the parent questionnaire in the voice you actually use about your child at home.
  • Attend the equity and inclusion workshops during the fall event season; they are genuinely informative about community life.
  • Check which division’s requirements apply before mapping your calendar.

Best Practices for Families

  • Do not rehearse your child for the Activity Session. Faculty are trained to notice coaching, and a scripted child reads as a scripted child.
  • Let your child be visibly uncertain in front of adults. Nueva treats productive struggle as evidence, not weakness.
  • Ask honestly whether your child wants open-ended ambiguity or thrives on structure and mastery. Both are legitimate, but only one fits here.
  • Connect with current families through affinity group events before decision season rather than after.
  • Keep the Clarity financial assistance deadline on a separate line in your calendar.

How Cardinal Education Helps Asian American Families at Nueva

At Cardinal Education, we tell families things they sometimes do not want to hear, including when a child who would thrive at a structured, mastery-driven school is being pushed toward one that prizes ambiguity. When Nueva is genuinely right, our work is to help your child become more recognizably themselves under observation, and to help you write about them without either inflating or underselling.
