The Nueva School’s Hillsborough campus serves roughly 517 students across lower school (PreK–4) and middle school (5–8) on a wooded hillside site off Skyline Boulevard. Founded in 1967 by Karen Stone McCown, Nueva was built around a conviction that gifted children need a fundamentally different kind of schooling, not simply a faster version of the standard one. The constructivist program pairs integrated curricula with subject-area specialists, and social-emotional learning carries the same weight as mathematics. Design thinking, engineering, and computer science sit alongside literature, civics, and world languages from the earliest grades. Hillsborough is where nearly every Nueva student begins, and where the school’s admissions process is at its most distinctive.

Nueva has published its full calendar for the 2026–27 admissions season. The November guarantee deadline is the one families most often underestimate, because it governs whether your child is assured an in-person Activity Session rather than being scheduled subject to availability.

Pre-kindergarten runs on a separate track with its own Round II process and deadlines, so PreK families should confirm dates directly with the admissions office rather than assuming the general calendar applies.
What Makes Nueva’s Hillsborough Admissions Process Unique?
Almost no other Bay Area independent school gates admission on cognitive testing the way Nueva does. Lower and middle school applicants must submit Wechsler IQ results from a licensed psychologist, and those results must fall in range before the application proceeds to later stages. The SSAT and ISEE play no part. What follows the testing is unusually child-centered: an Activity Session where your child works alongside other applicants while faculty observe, rather than a conventional interview. Parents carry real weight too, through both a written questionnaire and a recorded video questionnaire. It is a process that resists coaching by design.
What the Nueva Hillsborough Application Requires
Requirements differ meaningfully between the two divisions on this campus. Middle school applicants complete several components that lower school applicants do not, and building your timeline around the wrong division’s checklist is a common and costly error.
- 01Wechsler IQ Assessment
Required for all lower and middle school applicants, administered by a licensed psychologist outside the school. Younger children typically take the WPPSI-IV; older children take the WISC-V. Results must fall within Nueva’s target range for the application to continue, and the school does not publish that range. In-range results remain valid for two consecutive admissions cycles, and a child may only take the assessment once in any twelve-month period, so a rushed or poorly timed appointment carries a full year of consequence.

The opening step in Ravenna, submitted with the $100 application fee. Families applying for financial assistance can request a fee waiver within the platform.
- 03Parent and Guardian Written Questionnaire
Your written account of who your child is: temperament, obsessions, how they handle frustration, what they do with unstructured time. Specific and honest beats polished and promotional. - 04Parent and Guardian Video Questionnaire
Recorded through the Kira platform, with a personalized link that appears in Ravenna once the Family Information Form and in-range IQ results are submitted. You get preparation time before each response, and you can complete it across multiple sittings.
- 05Transcripts and Teacher Evaluations
Your child’s current school uploads prior-year reports, current-year grades as they become available in late January, and anything else in the cumulative file. Lower school applicants submit the common ISSFBA student evaluation form. Middle school applicants need a principal or counselor recommendation plus evaluations from one current and one previous core subject teacher.
- 06Activity Session
Middle school Activity Sessions run November through January, with most applicants attending in December. For grades 1 through 4 the picture is different: sessions are offered on a limited basis and waived for most applicants. The committee reviews submitted materials first and reaches out only if a session would genuinely help the decision.
- 07Middle School Only: Timed Writing Sample, Student Questionnaire, and Creative Project
Grade 5–8 applicants complete a 30-minute proctored writing sample through Kira Talent, answer a character-limited student questionnaire, and submit a Creative Project begun after September 1 in any medium they choose. Nueva monitors the writing sample for outside assistance, including AI, and a violation permanently bars the applicant from future cycles. None of these three components applies to PreK–4 applicants.
Top Tips for Applying
- Book the IQ assessment the moment your child is eligible; qualified psychologists in San Mateo County book out months ahead.
- Treat November 3 as your real deadline rather than January 5 if your child is entering Kindergarten or grade 5.
- Write the parent questionnaire in your own voice, with concrete anecdotes rather than adjectives.
- If your child is applying to grades 1 through 4, prepare the file thoroughly and let the Activity Session question resolve itself.
- Confirm which division’s requirement list applies before you build your calendar.
Best Practices for Families
- Resist over-preparing your child for the Activity Session. Faculty are watching how children collaborate and recover from difficulty, and rehearsed children read as rehearsed.
- Have a candid family conversation about fit. Nueva suits children who are genuinely energized by open-ended problems, and it is not the right home for every bright child.
- Attend optional events and workshops, which cover giftedness, equity and inclusion, and financial assistance.
- Keep the financial assistance timeline separate in your mind; Clarity closes on February 3, a month after the application.
- Build in a buffer for teacher evaluations rather than requesting them in December.
