Overview of The Loomis Chaffee School
Chartered in 1874 and opened in 1914, The Loomis Chaffee School is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory boarding and day school on a 300-acre campus in Windsor, Connecticut, serving Grades 9–12 and a postgraduate year. Loomis Chaffee was founded by five Loomis siblings who, after all of their own children died before age 21, determined to turn tragedy into generosity by founding a school as a gift to the children of others.
The school enrolls approximately 742–745 students, roughly 70% of whom board on campus. Loomis Chaffee does not require standardized testing as part of its admissions process and is known for its interdisciplinary academic centers, including the Norton Family Center for the Common Good and the Alvord Center for Global & Environmental Studies.

What Makes Loomis Chaffee’s Admissions Process Unique?
Loomis Chaffee operates on a test-optional admissions policy, meaning SSAT, ISEE, SAT, or ACT scores are not required for applicants, a distinctive approach among top Connecticut boarding schools.
However, non-native English speakers who have attended an English-medium school for fewer than two consecutive years are strictly required to submit official English proficiency test results (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test). Applications received after the January 15 primary deadline are considered on a rolling basis after March 10 if space remains available.

Submitted via Gateway or SAO for all applicants (Grades 9–12 and PG). Includes brief short-answer responses on immediate interests and a 250–500 word personal essay.

02Parent/Guardian Statement
Submitted via Gateway or SAO for all applicants (Grades 9–12 and PG). The parent/guardian statement provides insight into the applicant’s character, academic strengths, and goals.

03Recommendation Letters
Submitted via Gateway or SAO for all applicants (Grades 9–12 and PG). Requires recommendations from current English and math teachers, plus a principal or counselor school report. An optional special-interest recommendation is also accepted.

Submitted via Gateway or SAO for all applicants (Grades 9–12 and PG). Requires official transcripts from the prior two years, first-marking-period grades for the current year, and conduct records.

Strongly encouraged for all applicants, available on campus or virtually via Zoom. Non-native English speakers or those unable to schedule directly may submit an InitialView or Vericant interview.

Test-optional for all applicants. Candidates may submit SSAT/ISEE (Grades 9–11) or PSAT/SAT/ACT (Grades 11–12 and PG). English proficiency scores (TOEFL, DET, IELTS) are required for non-native speakers with less than two years in an English-medium school.

Applicants wishing to share areas of special interest or talent must provide multimedia links directly through their SAO or Gateway application. Loomis Chaffee accepts platforms such as Vimeo, Hudl, or YouTube and does not review links from Google Drive or social media pages.
