Synapse Through an Asian American Family’s Lens

A school-reported figure from the 2021–22 school year put Synapse’s Asian American enrollment at approximately 34.9% of the student body, comparable to the surrounding Palo Alto Unified School District’s 39.3% at the time. Synapse does not publish a more current, specific figure, so families should treat this as historical context rather than a current statistic. Niche reviews highlight Synapse’s Menlo Park location, describing the school’s culture as shaped by the region’s dynamic cultural, intellectual, and ethnic diversity, minutes from Stanford University. Founded in 2008, Synapse is a TK–8 school built around Leading-Edge Academics, Social-Emotional Learning, and Innovation.

What Families Should Ask About Community Fit

Because Synapse doesn’t publish current demographic data, the Information Session and campus visit are genuinely the best opportunities for Asian American families to get a real sense of the community. Families should ask directly about current representation, how the school’s stated commitment to inclusivity and neurodiversity plays out day to day, and whether any parent or student affinity spaces currently exist, since these can shift from year to year at a school this size.

What the Synapse Application Requires

To apply to Synapse School, you will need to complete the following:

  1. 01Student Questionnaire

The student questionnaire provides the admissions committee with a direct sense of your child’s voice, offering insight into how they will contribute to the Synapse community.

  2. 02Parent Questionnaire

The parent questionnaire allows you to advocate for your child by highlighting their character and personal growth, providing the admissions committee with essential context on how your family’s values align with Synapse’s mission of cultivating a project-based, innovation-focused, and emotionally intelligent learning environment.

  3. 03Recommendations

Request and submit confidential recommendations through Ravenna by entering contact details for your child’s current math and English teachers (a principal, counselor, or advisor is optional). The portal emails evaluation forms directly to educators and updates your dashboard upon completion.

  4. 04Transcripts

Applicants must request and upload official academic transcripts covering the prior two academic years and the current fall term directly through the Ravenna portal.

  5. 05Admissions Interview

The interview is a vital opportunity for the admissions committee to understand the student’s unique personality and interests, ensuring your family’s values align with the Synapse community.

  6. 06Student Experience Day

Applicants to Grades 1–8 experience Synapse’s program directly with current teachers, including a tour and, for Grades 5–8, an introduction to athletics, clubs, electives, and the Brainwave Learning Center’s research assistant program.

  7. 07Testing Policy

Synapse does not require standardized testing. Applicants may optionally submit any academic assessment, including WISC, WPPSI, ISEE, or SSAT scores, as supplemental material.
