About Sidwell Friends School
Sidwell Friends School is the only Quaker school in the nation’s capital, educating roughly 1,145 students from prekindergarten through twelfth grade. Thomas W. Sidwell founded the School in 1883, and its motto still comes from the Quaker idea of inner light: Eluceat Omnibus Lux, or let the light shine out from all. The Middle and Upper Schools share a campus on Wisconsin Avenue NW, where students in Grades 5 through 12 attend weekly Meeting for Worship alongside a genuinely demanding academic program. Sidwell does not calculate GPAs and does not weight courses. That one policy tells you most of what you need to know about how this school thinks about achievement, and about what it looks for in the children it admits.

Tours, information sessions, and open houses run throughout the fall, and registration for all of them happens through Ravenna. Capacity is limited and the School asks each family to choose the single option that suits them best. Specific event dates are published on Ravenna rather than on a fixed annual calendar, so check there rather than assuming last year’s schedule repeats.
What Makes Sidwell Friends Admissions Different?
Most selective schools will tell you they read holistically. Sidwell has built a process that actually behaves that way. There is no GPA to hide behind and no weighted transcript to inflate. The School admits new students almost entirely into three entry grades, so timing matters more here than at schools with rolling capacity. And it asks for something unusual: a video from the applicant, submitted alongside the assessment and the recommendations. Together those pieces ask a child to be recognizable as a person, not just as a file. Families who prepare for the paperwork and ignore that shift tend to submit a technically complete application that says very little.

01Family Information Form
This is the application’s spine and it is due December 1, ahead of everything else. The School suggests setting aside 20 to 30 minutes for it. Note that Sidwell asks families to submit only what is specifically requested, so resist the urge to append supplementary material; doing so works against you rather than for you.

02Teacher Recommendations
Applicants to Grades 6, 7, and 9 need confidential recommendations from their current math and English teachers. The timing rule is strict and catches families out every year: requests sent before November 1 will not be accepted. The reasoning is sound, since a teacher needs a real term with your child before writing anything worth reading. Build the relationship in September and October, then ask.

03School Records and Report Cards
Sidwell asks for the previous year’s report cards by December 15, then the first quarter or first trimester report from the current year by December 31. That second deadline means fall grades are part of the file. A strong first marking period is worth real effort.

04The Sidwell Friends Assessment and Group Visit
Applicants to Grades 6, 7, and 9 register for a Sidwell Friends School Assessment through Ravenna. A limited number of Be Our Guest Days, which are shortened shadow visits that fold the assessment into a campus day, are offered during the fall. A student completes one format or the other, never both.

05The Applicant Video
This is the component most families underestimate, and it is required by December 31 for Grades 6, 7, and 9. Instructions arrive after the Family Information Form is submitted. Treat it as a chance for admissions officers to meet your child rather than as a performance to be scripted. Over-rehearsed videos read as exactly that, and at a school built on plain speech and reflection they land badly. The goal is a child who sounds like themselves, thinking out loud about something they actually care about.

06Standardized and Admissions Testing
Standardized in-school testing is required. Admissions testing is optional, and for ninth grade applicants Sidwell accepts either the SSAT or the ISEE. Optional is not the same as irrelevant, and the calculus of whether to submit a test-optional score depends on your child’s profile rather than on a general rule.

07Parent or Guardian Meeting
Families schedule a parent meeting by December 15. For ninth grade applicants it is held virtually and framed as an interview. For Grades 6 and 7 it may be in person or virtual. Thoughtful interview preparation matters here, because this conversation is where a family’s values either align with the School’s or visibly do not.
Top Tips for Applying
- Start the Family Information Form in August, not November. The December 1 deadline arrives first.
- Diarize November 1 as the earliest date to request teacher recommendations.
- Apply into an expansion grade if you reasonably can. Sixth, seventh, and ninth are where the seats are.
- Protect the first quarter of the current school year, since those grades are part of the file.
- Record the applicant video early enough to do a second take without panic.
- Register for a fall tour or information session through Ravenna before capacity fills.

- Read the Quaker testimonies before your parent meeting. They are not decoration; they shape the School.
- Submit only what is asked for. Sidwell states this plainly and means it.
- Let your child answer questions about your child. Parents who over-narrate are noticed.
- Be honest about fit. A school with no GPAs and weekly Meeting for Worship suits some children and not others.
- If you are applying from outside the DC region, start early and tell Admissions, since in-person steps are handled differently.
