What Makes Menlo School’s Admissions Process Unique?
Two things set Menlo apart from its Peninsula peers. First, the testing policy is unusually strict. Menlo requires its own version of the STAR Assessment and will not accept other standardized test results from local applicants, so the familiar strategy of submitting a strong ISEE or SSAT score simply does not apply here. Second, the interview is required rather than encouraged, and it is structured differently by division: sixth graders are interviewed in small groups during a day-long campus visit, while ninth graders sit for a one-on-one conversation. Your child needs to be prepared for a genuine conversation, not a rehearsed performance.
What the Menlo School Application Requires
Menlo runs its entire application through Ravenna. Requirements differ by division, and the deadlines split into two tiers: what your family controls is due January 5, and what your child’s current school submits is due January 31.
Top Tips for Applying
- Register early. Every Menlo admissions event requires registration through Ravenna and space is limited.
- Apply at a natural entry point. Sixth and ninth grade are the primary doors in; other grades are space-available, and for this cycle Menlo is only accepting transfer applications for 10th grade.
- Start STAR preparation in the summer, not in December. The assessment is taken in the fall, well before the January deadline.
- Treat the Kira video as a family project and give yourselves several sessions with it.
- Ask recommenders in September, before their fall gets crowded.
Best Practices for Families
- Attend a Parent Information Session before your child’s visit day so your questions on the visit are sharper.
- Read Menlo’s own description of the student it is looking for and be honest with yourselves about the fit.
- Build a realistic commute plan. Menlo runs four free bus routes and a Caltrain shuttle, and knowing your route removes a real logistical worry later.
- Do not confuse a casual dress code with a casual evaluation.
- Keep your child’s current-year grades strong. Menlo reads them.
- 01Testing: The STAR Assessment and Writing Sample
Standardized testing is required. Applicants must complete Menlo’s STAR Assessment in the fall of 2026, either at Menlo or at one of the peer schools that administers it, along with a proctored writing sample. Other test results will not be accepted in place of it from local applicants. Families living outside the nine Bay Area counties who genuinely cannot attend an in-person session may submit SSAT or ISEE scores instead. International applicants must also submit TOEFL scores if their current school does not teach primarily in English.
- 02The Kira Family Video Questionnaire
Your family records timed video responses to prompts through the Kira platform, using a computer with a working camera and microphone. This is a family exercise, not just your child’s. Answers should sound like your household actually talks, because admissions readers can tell the difference between a considered response and a memorized one.
- 03Recommendation Letters
Menlo asks for different recommenders depending on the division your child is entering.
- Middle School (grades 6–8): a principal or counselor recommendation, a current-year teacher recommendation, and a previous-year teacher recommendation.
- Upper School (grades 9–12): a principal or counselor recommendation, a current English teacher recommendation, and a current math teacher recommendation.
Give recommenders eight weeks and a short written summary of the projects your child cared about in their class. Specific memories produce specific letters.
- 04Transcripts and the Activity and Interest Form
Menlo reviews both the previous academic year and the current year in progress. The Activity and Interest Form asks your child to account for how they actually spend their time outside class. Depth reads better than volume here, particularly at a school that openly says it wants students who will engage beyond the classroom.
- 05The Interview
Interviews run from October through January and are usually attached to the campus visit. Menlo describes the format as relaxed and conversational, and casual dress is expected. That informality is not an invitation to arrive unprepared. Your child should be able to speak specifically about what draws them to Menlo and should come with real questions of their own.
