What the Flintridge Prep Application Requires
- 01Transcripts and Recommendations
Official transcripts (current-year first semester plus the prior year or two) and recommendation letters from current math and English teachers, plus a school administrator, go through the admissions portal. A prior-year teacher fills in if one instructor covers both subjects.
- 02ISEE or SSAT
Families choose between the ISEE and SSAT — Flintridge Prep doesn’t favor one over the other — and 10th/11th grade applicants can substitute a PSAT, SAT, or ACT score. We regularly see families default to whichever test is more common in their community rather than the one that actually fits their child’s strengths; a quick diagnostic on both is worth the hour it takes.
- 03Character Skills Snapshot and Writing Reflection
A roughly 25–30 minute online character assessment, plus an on-campus writing reflection (grades 7–9) or individual interview (grades 10–11). Neither is scored against a rubric your child can memorize in advance — both are designed to see how your child actually thinks.
Applying to Flintridge Prep as an Asian American Family
Asian American students make up roughly a third of Flintridge Prep’s student body, among the largest single groups on campus, alongside white students, in a school of 530 that identifies 62% of its population as students of color. That’s a meaningfully different landscape than many of the day schools families cross-apply to in the San Gabriel Valley, and it changes some of what we hear from families: less “will my child be the only one,” more “how do we make our child’s application distinct in a genuinely competitive applicant pool.” Flintridge Prep’s own student leadership groups, including BRIDGE (Belonging, Respect, Inclusion, and Diversity Grounded in Equity), organize cross-cultural events like an annual Friendsgiving built around the school’s identity-based clubs, a signal that cultural specificity is something the school actively makes room for, not something students have to set aside once they arrive.

How Cardinal Education Helps
One pattern we see often with high-achieving Asian American applicants: essays and writing reflections that lean almost entirely on measurable achievement (test scores, competition placements, hours logged) and read, as a result, almost identically to dozens of other strong applications the admissions committee sees that same season. Flintridge Prep’s Character Skills Snapshot and writing reflection are built specifically to surface something a resume can’t: how your child actually reasons through a problem or reflects on an experience. Our private school admissions consulting starts by finding what’s genuinely distinct in your child’s story, not the achievement, but the thinking behind it and building the writing reflection and interview preparation around that.
