Ask an Asian American parent on the Eastside why Eastside Preparatory School is on their list and the answer usually starts with proximity to work and ends somewhere more complicated. The school sits minutes from Redmond and Bellevue, in the middle of a technology corridor that has drawn Asian American families to this part of Washington for three decades. Roughly two thirds of its 538 students are students of color. But the more interesting question is not whether your child would see themselves reflected at EPS. It is whether a school that has deliberately removed every familiar marker of academic rank, no Advanced Placement, no International Baccalaureate, no Honors track, is the right place for a student whose family measures rigor the way many of ours were taught to.

Top Tips for Applying
- Resist the instinct to submit everything. Eastside Prep explicitly refuses portfolios, competition certificates and outside evaluations, and will not show them to the committee.
- Do not assume a strong ISEE or SSAT score is the safe route. School-administered testing is weighed equally here.
- Prepare your child for a recorded assessment. Students used to live conversation often over-rehearse on camera.
- Book the parent interview the week it opens. Limited slots, first-come.
- Speak to what your child is curious about, not only what they have achieved.

01Family Forms Through the Consortium
The parent statement and guardian statements, the student interests and activities form and the student essay are shared Puget Sound Independent Schools forms, completed once in Aryval and reusable across member schools. The parent statement is where many Asian American families under-sell themselves, writing a resume of their child’s accomplishments when the committee is trying to understand a person.

02Two Teacher Evaluations
Submitted through Ravenna Hub. Fifth and sixth grade applicants should ask homeroom or primary teachers; applicants to grades 7 through 11 should ask core subject teachers. In both cases the school prefers two different disciplines and teachers from the current or previous year.

03Records Covering Three Years
Transcripts and grade reports for three years including the current one. Families arriving from schools outside the United States should expect to provide translated records, and international applicants have a separate checklist including English proficiency testing.

04One Set of Test Scores, Your Choice

05The Recorded Student Assessment
Not a live interview. Your child records video responses and writes answers on the Kira platform, at a time of their choosing before the deadline, after practicing as often as they want. The practice rounds matter. Students who treat them seriously sound like themselves; students who skip them tend to sound rehearsed.

06The Optional Parent Interview
Thirty minutes, virtual, booked in Aryval from October. The school calls it optional while also saying it hopes to interview every applying family. Read that as strongly recommended.
