Quick Answer for Busy Parents
Flintridge Prep’s individual interview applies to applicants to grades 10 and 11 only. Grades 7–9 complete a writing reflection and classroom visit instead, as part of the school’s full application process. The interview itself is a one-on-one conversation with an admissions officer, evaluating character and fit beyond grades and test scores. The strongest answers are specific and honest rather than rehearsed, and students who complete at least one full mock interview tend to walk in far calmer than those who only reviewed sample questions.
Who Interviews, and Who Doesn’t
This is the detail most guides skip, and it’s the one that actually changes how a family should prepare. Flintridge Prep splits its final assessment stage by grade level:
- Grades 7–9: a writing reflection plus a classroom visit — no individual interview
- Grades 10–11: an individual interview — no written reflection or classroom visit
If your child is applying to 7th, 8th, or 9th grade, the prep below on questions and body language won’t apply in the same way; what matters instead is how they write unscripted and how they behave in an actual class period. The rest of this guide is specific to the grades 10–11 interview.
What the Interview Is Actually Evaluating
The interview exists to answer one question the rest of the application can’t: how does this student think and communicate in real time? Admissions officers are listening for whether a student can talk specifically about their own experience — not for a rehearsed pitch. Two things tend to separate a strong interview from a forgettable one: specificity (a real example beats a general claim every time) and whether the student can explain why Flintridge Prep rather than reciting why private school in general.
Questions to Prepare For
The interview is conversational, but “conversational” doesn’t mean unprepared. Our admissions consultants make sure a student is ready to speak to:
- What they enjoy academically, and why — specifically, not just “I like science”
- A real challenge they’ve faced and how they handled it
- How they’ve contributed to their current school or community
- Why Flintridge Prep, specifically — this only works if they can name something particular about the school (small classes, a specific STEAM program, the Honor Code) rather than generic private-school language
The strongest answers use a real story rather than a general trait claim. “I’m a hard worker” is forgettable. A specific project that went wrong and what the student did next is not.
Bring Real Questions, Not Just Answers
The interview runs both directions, and admissions officers notice when a student has nothing to ask. Questions that signal genuine research beat generic ones — asking about a specific program, club, or aspect of school culture shows more preparation than “What makes your school special?”
Delivery Matters as Much as Content
Eye contact, a calm pace, and posture aren’t cosmetic — they’re part of how an interviewer reads confidence and comfort. Rushed, one-word answers read as nervousness even when the content is strong. Practicing out loud, not just thinking through answers mentally, is the difference between a student who sounds prepared and one who sounds like they’re reciting.
Nerves Are Normal — Preparation Is the Fix
Some nervousness is expected and not a red flag to admissions. What helps most isn’t eliminating nerves but having practiced the format enough that the format itself isn’t a surprise — a student who’s done at least one full mock interview walks in knowing what the rhythm of the conversation feels like, which does more for calm delivery than any breathing exercise.
