Asian American Students at The Nueva School Upper School
Roughly three in four Nueva students are students of color, and the Upper School sustains an Asian and Pacific Islander affinity group alongside separate Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and South Asian groups. For Asian American families on the Peninsula, that matters less as a diversity statistic than as a plain practical fact: your child will not be the only one, and will not be asked to represent anyone. Nueva opened its San Mateo campus in 2014, extending a school founded in 1967 for gifted learners. It enrolls 450 students across grades 9 through 12, teaches Mandarin and Japanese alongside Spanish, and designates no Honors or Advanced Placement courses whatsoever. That final detail reshapes the application far more than most families anticipate.

Why Nueva Admissions Works Differently Than Asian American Families Expect
Most of the preparation that reliably opens doors at selective Bay Area high schools does nothing here. Nueva does not require the ISEE or the SSAT, and it will not accept them if you send them. It does not require an IQ assessment for the Upper School, unlike its own PreK through grade 8 divisions. There are no AP courses to point at. Families who have spent two years building a measurable record often arrive with a folder Nueva has no place to put. There is a second thing worth saying plainly. In a student body that is 76% students of color, with a substantial Asian American population, academic strength is the baseline rather than the distinguishing feature. What distinguishes an applicant here is a specific, demonstrable way of thinking, and that is harder to build in a season.
What Nueva Actually Asks Asian American Applicants For
Top Tips for Asian Americans Applying to Nueva
- Redirect any test-prep budget toward the timed writing sample, which is the one assessed piece of writing Nueva sees and cannot be revised.
- Aim at grade 9. Grade 10 admits roughly zero to three students, and grades 11 and 12 are special-circumstance only, so a wait-and-see year is usually a closed door.
- Let your child speak about a genuine interest, even an unglamorous one. Nueva reads a curated resume of prestige activities as a parent’s work rather than a student’s.
- Prepare your child to disagree politely with a peer during the Activity Session. Deference reads as disengagement in a room designed to observe collaboration.
- Send nothing extra. Nueva states that additional documents and recommendations, including from current Nueva families, will not be accepted.
Best Practices for Asian American Families Applying to Nueva
- Visit before you apply. A Program Preview gives your child concrete detail to reference, which separates a real application from an admiring one.
- Take the Parent/Guardian Written Questionnaire seriously and answer it in your own voice, including in imperfect English if that is your voice. Polished uniformity is more suspicious than accent.
- Ask honestly whether an unstructured, project-driven school suits your child. Some strong, well-organized students are less happy at Nueva than at a more conventional program, and that is a legitimate reason to apply elsewhere.
- Look at the affinity groups and language offerings during your visit if cultural community matters to your family, and ask current parents rather than the admissions office.
- Track deadlines yourself as Nueva posts them, since the fall calendar lands late and fills fast.
- 01Testing Policy
Entrance testing is neither required nor accepted, and that includes both the ISEE and the SSAT. IQ assessments are not required for upper school applicants, though families holding existing results may email them to the admissions office.
- 02Timed Writing Sample
Delivered virtually through Kira Talent as part of the questionnaire process, the Timed Writing Sample gives your child 30 minutes to plan and write an essay from a supplied prompt, entirely unassisted. Kira Talent monitors for adult help and AI use. An application flagged for either is withdrawn, and the student is permanently barred from applying to Nueva.
- 03Written Questionnaires
Applicants and parents each complete a written questionnaire through Ravenna. These stand in for the personal statement and parent statement used at most peer schools, and both are read closely.
- 04Interview and Activity Session
The interview carries high weight. Applicants also attend an on-campus Activity Session combining independent work, hands-on group tasks, and conversation with faculty and other candidates.
- 05Transcripts, Recommendations, and the Application Form
Families inquire through Ravenna, then submit the Family Information Form with a nonrefundable $100 application fee, followed by a school transcript and teacher recommendation letters.
