Flintridge Preparatory School is a private, coeducational day school in La Cañada Flintridge serving 530 students across middle school (grades 7–8) and high school (grades 9–12). Founded in 1933 as an all-boys school and coeducational since 1979, Flintridge Prep pairs a demanding academic program — English, history, mathematics, science, world languages, and visual and performing arts — with an 8:1 student-teacher ratio and a 14-sport, 23-team athletics program. What Makes Flintridge Prep’s Admissions Process Unique?
Flintridge Prep doesn’t use a single standardized-test cutoff to sort applicants — it explicitly allows families to choose between the ISEE and SSAT, and lets 10th and 11th-grade applicants substitute a PSAT, SAT, or ACT score instead. That flexibility is deliberate: the school pairs it with a required Character Skills Snapshot and an on-campus writing reflection, both designed to surface how a student thinks and works under real conditions, not just how they perform on one exam. Most seats open at two entry points — 7th and 9th grade — with 8th, 10th, and 11th grade admission considered only as space allows, so timing your child’s application to the right entry year matters as much as the application itself.

What the Flintridge Prep Application Requires
- 01Transcripts
Flintridge Prep requests official transcripts covering the current school year’s first semester along with the prior year or two, submitted through the admissions portal. If your child’s grades need a boost before this goes in, our tutors and academic coaches can help.
- 02Recommendation Letters
Current math and English teachers, plus a school administrator, are required to submit recommendations. If one teacher covers both subjects, a prior-year teacher’s letter fills the gap. Additional letters from a coach or mentor are optional but welcome.
- 03Testing
ISEE or SSAT: Applicants submit either the ISEE or the SSAT — Flintridge Prep has no preference between the two. Grades 10 and 11 applicants may submit a PSAT, SAT, or ACT score in lieu of either exam. Our test prep programs help students choose the right test and prepare for it with real timing and structure.
- 04Character Skills Snapshot
A roughly 25–30 minute online assessment of seven character traits: initiative, open-mindedness, intellectual engagement, self-control, resilience, teamwork, and social awareness, completed from home, school, or wherever your child is most comfortable.
- 05Writing Reflection and Interview
Grades 7–9 applicants complete a short writing reflection and classroom visit during their campus visit, with parents joining a small-group conversation with an admissions officer.
