In 15th-century Poland, a boy named Joseph and his family flee to Kraków carrying a precious, mysterious jewel that a band of Tartar enemies is determined to steal, and Joseph takes up his family's traditional post as the trumpeter atop St. Mary's Church, sounding the hourly alarm that (according to legend) is cut short each time in memory of a trumpeter killed by an arrow centuries before.
