An unnamed Victorian scientist builds a machine that lets him travel far into the future, where he discovers humanity has split into two very different species: the frail, childlike Eloi living an idle life above ground, and the brutish, subterranean Morlocks who prey on them. H. G. Wells uses the journey to explore anxieties about class division and evolution, and the novel is credited with popularizing the concept of time travel via a vehicle in science fiction.
