Jerome Foxworthy, one of the first Black students to integrate his North Carolina junior high school, forms an unlikely friendship with Bix Rivers, a white classmate struggling with his mother's mental illness and his stepfather's cruelty. Jerome teaches Bix basketball, including a signature fake-out move, in a friendship that becomes a lens on race, class, and the fault lines running through their small Southern town.
